Everything just feels so... like it's supposed to be. It's been less than a week and I already know that I NEED to come back. 6 weeks really seemed like so long when sitting thinking about it at home but this is just too good. I think what has really stuckme the most about this and what I like the most, ironically, are Thai customs. Ironically because Thai customs are what the group, as a whole is struggling the most with!Thai beliefs and culture is the way I wish I couldalways live at home. There is a huge focus on others. One example is never lifting your foot over something, just because that would mean that you are going out of your way by walking around to show that whatever it is, is worth it.

there is so much to take in for all of us. we just took a 6 hour bus ride from Sukothai to Chang Mai. In Sukothai (3 day stay) we visited the market, temples, historical sites/ruins, learned how to count, and ate the best food! each day we are absorbing so much about the life and culture of Thai people.

we go around and say "saw at di ka/kap" (hello) to everyone we see; they laugh at us but we love it. the street vendors and market workers are incredibly nice and welcoming. the people in thailand are kind and hardworking.

we did our laundry for the first time yesterday, and we felt like a bunch of little kids playing and splashing in water! it was a work out, but we all got to experience a small taste of doing laundry the long way.

we are now in Chang Mai and are ready for another four days of learning.

Greetings from Sukhothai!!!

We have arrived safe and sound in Sukhothai, the first capital of Siam. We arrived in Bangkok on June 30th where we, with the help of our two "pu-num" (leaders of the day) who found us a mode of public transportation, made it to the We-Train International House. There we had our first cultural orientation on greetings, common phrases and culturally appropriate behavior such as how to properly sit, walk and dress. The students also had their first Thai meal - a selection of dishes with varying degrees of spiciness.

The next morning the group went to Wat Laksi - a temple in Virada's mom's childhood stomping grounds. Here, the students experienced their first Thai Buddhist blessing from a monk. This is a traditional Thai practice to "tum boon" (make an offering and make merit) for the safety and prosperity of our journey.

Afterwards, we boarded a train heading north to Phitsanulok. It was an eight hour ride, but it gave the students an opportunity to chat and get to know one another while trying a wealth of Thai drinks, snacks and fruits. The group favorite at the moment seems to be green mango slices dipped in a spicy, sweet sugar with dried chili pepper. From there, we took a bus, tuk-tuks (three wheeled motor vehicles) and song thaews (covered pick-ups with two rows of seats) to the Ban Thai Guest House in Sukhothai.

We will be here for the next three days... today we have biked around the 700 year old ruins of the ancient kingdom, and later, the students with have a food/market Thai lesson that they apply towards buying the group's dinner this evening.

All the best to the families back home,

The Instructor Team: Virada, Mandy, Derek

So far, we have Taken 8 hour train rides, prayed at temple, visited ruins and the best is yet to come. I am an avid eater and i must say that this is the best country for me. At every turn there is food waitng yet in moderate proportions. On top of that, everything, I repeat everything is spicy which is lucky for me. We have just begun our journey, there is still so much to do. Later today we will get thai massages and eat at a thai market. This has been the craziestand bestthing I have done in my life.

So far, our trip has been hot. We have spent most of our time traveling, which included an 8 hour tain ride with no air conditioning. However there has never been a dull moment. Today we biked the ruins of Su-kot-thai, the old capital of Thailand. We saw multiple buddah statues, big and small. A few of us, myself included, woke up early today and took a trip to the market. There, we bought fresh mango, fried bananas, and Thai doughnuts.

Later today, we will learn the art of Thai massage and take another trip to a market, where we will hopefully buy traditional bathing cloths. Because of the heat, showers are extremely frequent here. The bathrooms are unique (to say the least) in that they require you to stand on top of the toilet seat. Over the next few days, we will continue our stay here and then move on to Chieng Mai. So far the trip has been a memorable one and I can not wait for the rest of it.

Hi everyone,

Thailand has been really great for the first four days that we have been here. Everything is so different here. The food is really great and everyone is really nice. On out first day we arrived in Bangkok and then stayed at a guesthouse on the outskirts of town. The guesthouse was really clean and nice...we were'nt really expecting to stay in a place that nice. Our idea was that we were going to be living in a tent in the middle of the jungle near bangkok on our first night, or maybe even a youth hostel. The flight to Hong Kong was long and exhausting. The flight from Hong Kong to Bangkok was short and the planes are really nice that we fly on. We are now staying at an even better guesthouse than the one before. We took an eight hour train ride and a one hour bus ride to Sukhothai which is where we are at the moment. The train an bus rides, although long, are great opportunities to meeet local people and experience Thai culture. They do have American food here, so if we dont enjoy the Thai food we can always fall back on a grilled cheese and fries until we find something we like. We just finished a bike ride through the ruins. Although the plaques we inThai, our Instructors were able toexplain to us their significance. And nowwe're in an Internet Cafe, drinking Chayenne (Thai Chai Tea),and getting ready to goto the market.

Sawadeeka,

Sam and Gabby

For the first few days here in Thailand, somewhere beetween all that long travel (....1.5 days, then 8 hour train ride, then 1 hour bus ride), we have all decided and we have all found out that, truly, the only way to have a good trip is to be ourselves, do what we like, and step out of our comfort zone.

So far we have learned:

1) Hello: สวัสคึ

2)Excuse me: บอโทษ

3) Thank you: บอบคูณ

4) Thai people are extremely nice, willing to help, pretty entertained by what we do, wanting to teach, and willing to give.

5) How to cross the street

6) Thai Customs (which can be sumarizsed as Humility, and self-less-ness)

7) Thai Food is Amazing

As always (or atleast for the time alotted) our group is getting along well and loving everything. We had a great safe flight (even though we almost missed our plane because of a non-existent infant), safe bus travel (with group members taking nice naps..on otehr group members), and safe train travel (with the greatest smorgas-board of thai snacks... which even our leaders were surprised at our willingness to try!)

Comment back if you guys want to comunicate, I'm sure we'll be glad to respond to specific questions and such!

Bye Bye for now!

Whats going on everybody,

I am sitting in an Internet cafe, with my shoes off, in the Old Capitol of Thailand called Sukothai. This has already been the most incredible 4 days of my life. My group members and leaders are awesome. I am writing in my journal constantly, which will be fun to go over it with you guys when i come home. The food is out of this world, and the people are so nice. I feel like a rockstar wherever i go. I have so many stories already.

If you want, you can comment on this Yak-Yak post.

i'll keep in touch.

much love

zach

the first few days of thailand have been great. we are still absorbing the fact that we are here for six weeks!

the food is absolutely fantastic. it's interesting;you try new things every meal, not knowing what to expect... kind of exciting!

we're being exposed the the culture and religion of thailand, and the people love us when we say hi (saw wat di cap) and thank you (cap kun cdap).

i'm really excited for the rest of the trip and there will be a lot more to share in next few weeks.
