Just wanted to throw this on the Yak-Yak for anybody who may not have heard my recent news, I'm going to be presenting what is effectively my ISP in front of my entire school on Thursday October 2nd.

My topic was the Americanization of Guatemala and its effects. I am going to expand this topic to include what we as American citizens can do to help communities abroad, as well as try to begin a dialog about national accountability.

I'm going to ask somebody to film it for me, and if it goes well I'll post it on youtube if anybody is interested.

Miss everybody!

Hudson

[post_content] => Hey everyone! I just kind of wanted to check in and see how everyone's doing. I know for me at least, with school finally starting, I have virtually no free time and keeping up with people is getting a bit harder. I met all of my prefectees yesterday and got them settled in their rooms. It's been so incredbly hot(as it always is when people start moving in), so moving boxs and couches and sitting in non-airconditioned rooms was pretty fun(it smelled pretty good too). Anyway, all of my prefectees are really sweet and I love them. Except one's knd of been a brat so far, but I'm sure her good qualities will come out as time goes on. I made them all spectacular signs for their doors out of little kids' t-shirts with cartoon characters on them and wrote them stories about how they got a magical power from whoever the character was on their t-shirts. (I know, I'm pretty grown-up and mature) But I thought they were great... It's kind of weird to suddenly be a leader instead of one of the students. But it's really fun, even if I don't always know what I'm supposed to do. One thing Dragons definately taught me was how to make mistakes and then how to bounce back from them! Tomorrow(Monday) I'm leaving for a week to go backpacking in the High Sierras with a pretty random group of people. I'm getting really excited to pull out all of my fabulous group bonding games...and since I'm a senior, I can force them all to play! YAY! Plus walking through the mountains will make things slow down a bit so I can actually think and read and write. Yay nature! Plus I know how to backpack and it'll be nice not to be confused for a little while. I love you all and miss you just as much as when we left And if you're ever in California, make sure you come to Ojai!

Hey all,

So its 11:49 my time on monday the 26th. Life has finally slowed down for me (except my mind). I finished all my pre-school work and (thank god) have the last few days to myself. I am going to see Becca on friday, which I am extremly excited about, seeing as I have not seen anyone since the airport. I also got to talk to Aaron yesterday. It was great to hear his voice. Right as he got off the phone, my cell phone rang and it was Tomas calling. It was amazing and wonderful. It totally made my day.

I really don't have a topic for this Yak. I just wanted to say hi to everyone that I haven't said hi to in a while and see how everyone is doing. I also forgot to put my email in the contact info so it will be at the end of this.

Life has been going American (seeing as I'm still going part Guatemalan). I now put on my seatebelt in the car without having to be reminded (which im not sure is a good thing or a bad thing).

I have been thinking about you guys more and more every day that goes by that I don't wake up to Ben dancing in his boxers or Tomas doing something insane or Hudson writing or Benito quoting (and i wont say who) some comedian and then leaving my room and not seeing Haley taking a picture or Anna craughing (which is a mix of crying and laughing) or Katie socializing or Ally saying something she didnt mean to say or Paige eating a choconanna or Emma laughing at something nasty that Becca said while Colleen, Luis and Aaron are off in a corner planing their world takeover/ our plan for the day.

Usually I wake up to a dark room, all by myself, thinking of you guys. And then I feel something choking me. I reach to my neck and find a string there. I sit up, find the two beads that have rolled to the back of the neclace, bring them back to the front, kiss the necklace and put it back under my shirt. The kissing thing is a ritual. Not once have I fixed or touched it without kissing it. It's amazing how much hope and happiness two little beads on a piece of string can give you. Yes people look at me funny, yes they might see it as a little weird but how can they know that everytime I touch that neclace I am flooded with happiness and know that even though you guys aren't here with me, I can close my eyes and see Bens feminine hips shaking right in front of my face. I know then, that you guys are still there in my heart and mind and will always be.

Each and every one of you are amazing and has affected me in your own special way. There is nothing I can say to express the extreem gratitude that I have for you. The only thing I can do is fix and kiss my neclace.

I love and miss you all.

Hoping that everything is well,

Dan

Some people have been asking me to pass along a copy of the poem I read during our last night, so here it is...

Stepping through the airport doors

Sights and Sounds we'd never seen before

Whisked away in our first of many "micros"

Nueva Alianza awaiting the arrival of 14 gringos

Candles and copal illuminated our welcoming ceremony

We left our fears in the fire for the coming journey

After waterfall showers and mud futbol madness

And Oswaldo's recounting of overcoming feudalistic induced sadness

We departed from our relative comfort zone

Cattle cars and camionetas lifting us into clouds of the unknown

The Cuchumatanes, backdrop to the pueblo of Todos Santos

Where technicolored traje attracts less attention than us extranjeros

Even after such a very short time together

Parting for our first homestays felt like a storm to be weathered

Allison regaled us all with enactments of miscommunication

A "drunken" tale of what can be lost in translation

Mayan ceremonies attempted to recreate sacred space

Cell phones a constant reminder of the cross-cultural challenges we face

However, no interruption could be so profound

As to break the silence left by Geranimo's sound

A brief ride away and enter Concepcion Huista

The lovely Dona greeted us, complete with her cinta

Here we really entered the realm "where there be dragons"

Where tourists and guide books can't even fathom

The cancha cleanup was motivated by the likes of Hudson's will

Watching him wade knee deep in a veritable shi...mud spill

Hikes down to the pristine waters of the Rio Azul

A day forever remembered for Thomas becoming a lovestruck fool

Circumstances diverted our original itinerary flow

But not even illness would keep us from summitting Tajumulco

Dan in particular made quite the inspirational sight

Battling through sickness to reach the tallest of heights

Santiaguito treated us to a morning firework show

Benito ate so many ham sandwiches I thought he'd be the one to blow

Back reimmersed in the comforts and luxuries of Xela

Hugo and Elbia helped advance our Spanish at CBA Escuela

Becca received special "extracurricular" classes

Her maestro Javi teaching her phrases that may be vulgar to the masses

Days filled with music, dance, and copious consumption of bread

There was an excursion to Fuentes Georginas and a saint who's alcohol fed

Rested and ready to undertake the next of our adventures

A 3 day hike with the colorful Quetzaltrekkers

On the trail we seemed fit enough to win a marathon

As we marched up "record hill" on the way to Lago Atitlan

Crossing rivers and climbing up steep Mayan narices

Through the cornfields and rain we all managed to stay felices

Then in a magical greeting to our temporary home

The sun painted a canvas of a lake surrounded by volcanic domes

Off slippery cliffs we leaped in to flight

Back to the kitchen for Paige's culinary delights

Passing through the tourist town of Panajachel

On to Pachaj where the real Lorax dwells

Armando's sincerity and passion were an inspiration to us all

Haley showed us her ability to sleep in a ball

Katie may have even found her home up in the trees

Shimmying up the trunks to help collect seeds

Antigua was a place to relax and shop

At least until we decided to summit another mountain top

Pacaya oozed and breathed from its belly of fire

Ben was transformed into a hobbit from the Shire

A brief stop through the poverty of Guate's lone basuero

Thankfully for some children there now exists a camino seguro

Pools of Semuc Champey and the candles in our cave

In the enclosed darkness Anna showed what it means to be brave

Frustrating circles in our collectivo to Peten

Finally we arrived in our open air cabins

Mayan kings perched atop pyramids of splendor

Emma made a sacred offering of last night's dinner

Juan opened up the ancient mysteries of Tikal

Clap, clap, can you hear the quetzals?

They once said, "I see me in you," "inglakesh alakim"

Looking in to each other's eyes it all felt like just a dream

Fantasies of friends and laughter shared

Walking through a reality that had parts of a nightmare

The beautiful and ugly, sacred and profane

Whatever we call it, we'll never forget Guatemala's name

It's a place to be remembered for all eternity

The smiles, talks, and Luispe's endless sincerity

When we wake up at home in our cozy beds at night

Filled with memories that seem so far out of sight

Perhaps a hint of sadness will creep under our skin

Thinking about all the magic, when it did first begin

There's a loneliness in stepping away from a world we entered together

But take comfort in knowing that we're always connected to each other

Despite all that I can no longer touch or see

I'll still be able to feel the smiles of 14 faces inside of me

dear friends,

the second i got home from the airport, delirious, my father shoved a telephone into my head and said,

"CAN'T YOU SPEAK TO YOUR GRANDMOTHER FOR FIVE MINUTES AFTER NOT SPEAKING TO HER FOR SIX WEEKS, OR ARE YOU TOO TIRED FOR THAT?"

"no, no i'll -- "

"HERE SHE IS. TAKE THE PHONE, HALEY, TAKE IT!"

"HELLO, DAHLING."

"hello, ba-noi."

"YOU HAVE BEEN AWAY FOR ALMOST TWO MONTHS, DAHLING, DID YOU LOSE MUCH WEIGHT?"

"i mean, not thatmuch but -- "

"SO YOU GAIN WEIGHT."

"we ate mostly tortillas. they -- "

"WHAT IS TORTILLA?"

"they're made of corn. they're kind of like the guatemalan equivalent of bread, but they're flat, and -- "

"SO YOU EAT PANCAKES FOR SIX WEEKS."

"...sort of. except tortillas don't really have a taste."

"REALLY, DAHLING. WELL, HOW BORING."

"actually, they're quite nice when you're hungry."

"SO TELL ME ABOUT THE POVERTY, DAHLING."

how does one respond to that?

"well...it was very dirty in todos, but xela was cleaner than new york. in concepcion, there's trash all over the roads. but everyone was so kind to us, ba-noi. we were guests in their houses, they fed us, you can't even imagine how kind -- "

"GOOD. NOW YOU REALIZE HOW, HOW LUCKAY YOU ARE, YOU CAN APPRECIATE YOUR FATHER. DO YOU APPRECIATE YOUR HOUSE NOW, DAHLING?"

"yes."

"NEXT SUMMER, MAYBE YOU GO SOMEWHERE MORE MODERN, OKAY? PARIS IS QUITE NICE, MAYBE SPAIN, YOU WANT TO GO TO SPAIN?"

"i'm not -- "

"AND THIS WINTER BREAK, YOU COME VISIT US IN HONG KONG, OKAY? YOUR GRANDFATHER IS GETTING OLD. HE MAY DIE ANY DAY NOW, SO IF YOU ARE NOT TOO BUSY, MAYBE YOU COME VISIT."

"yes."

"YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR FATHER. I WILL SPEAK TO HIM NOW."

"good-bye, ba-noi."

thank god, luispe, aaron, and colleen, that you made me into a peaceful person. thank god.

soi was sitting beneath an apple tree (!), and read something that made me think about coming home.

"if the society doesn't install the values anymore, your happiness and pleasure is entirely up to you; you have to work and earn it and install your own moral values."

-- hanif kureishi

by now, the effects of reverse culture shock are probably wearing off. your bed sheets might not seem as strange, your dishwasher isn't as fascinating. (favorite american rediscovery: elevators!). i expected to come home a revolutionary, or at the very least, a hermit.

instead, i've discovered how easy it is to get reacquainted. when you're sleeping beneath a new down comforter, it's hard to remember what it feels like to sleep on the floor, or that billions of people sleep on the floor every day. i'm sitting in the kitchen eating apple turnovers -- is that a dishonest experience because other people are going hungry?

i don't think that america is evil. i don't think americans are evil, and i don't think that we come from an evil culture. rather, americans have an infinite amount of lifestyle freedom. have three boyfriends! have ten cats! be gay! make tofu stirfry in your pajamas! it's just like how, because we have freedom of speech, people can publish fantastic political papers, but they can also publish pro-nazi freestyle raps. go figure.

what i mean to say is this: i know that so much of our lives here is excess, an excess that, in guatemala, was pared down to such beautiful simplicity. now that we've gone without functioning toilets, being in a sparkly clean bathroom again does not make us horrible people. the point of our trip was not to show us how much we can do without. rather, it was to pare down everything we didn't need and illuminate what we did need: each other. and although our lives at home seem so much more cluttered, our trip has given us the ability to sort through the mess, to grasp into the future and fashion it for ourselves.

"if the society doesn't install the values anymore, your happiness and pleasure is entirely up to you; you have to work and earn it and install your own moral values."

we know how to do that now. miss you all terribly.

xx haley

ahhhhh i just finished reading becca's "sensored" yakyak and laughed out loud at the way you finished it, in ghetto letters. Reading these has really made my week, and luckily i have about 7 more to read. Coming back has been really interesting..the first few days was just straight up separation anxiety, I was able to relate for the first time with my miserable dog milton, who drags himself around the house saturating himself in self pity and crying (yes, crying). I really didn't know what to do with myself and my mind would race as i felt asleep. It was nothing like being in Guatemala falling asleep where id be covered in lion blankets (why were they always lions?) or just surrounded by all you guys. I couldn't believe it was already slipping behind us.. because i was so overwhelmed i just turned inside myself for a few days...not looking at emails (anna knows) getting very selective with my phone calls, and spending excessive time with my brother, the closest thing to you guys i have! Even though i don't have you guys around i am living with such a fat slice of our trip inside. It has posed some problems as i ease back into the school scene with friends and such, i feel like they're getting the impression that i am apathetic to their conversation about boyfriends drunken nights and other "interesting" incidents, which i am entirely... translating to more alone time which I'm finding i need a lot of. I think about all you guys more than you know...hey Thomas how's cross country for you? (I am not yet recovered from the damage the thousands of snickers i managed to consume has most certainly done, luckily you avoided this predicament with your cheapassness!...yes..recall that conversation about the "absolutely ridiculous" prices of candy bars in guatemala) By the way nobody understands how amazing your humor, or worse your undying love for opy, really is. The more I'm home and the more people i begin to reach out to again, the more I realize what gems of people you guys truly are...and how much my spanish skills have improved YAYAYYYYEE. But honestly I am still so mopey about our trip being over...luckily anna is coming to sleep at my house tomorrow!!!!! as all of you guys can imagine, its going to be a lovefest. I'm going to stop and post this so i can finish reading all of your posts!

i love you guys more than life itself!!!

please contact me! because sadly the only person from this trip that has has been alyanna (because she pretty much came with us)

(Contact info editted out by Boulder office to ensure privacy; Boulder office will send complete contact sheets to all students.)

i LOVE you guys! and i really want to see these supposed youtube videos
