We are here in Guatemala! Its an absolutely beautiful country with beautiful people. We arrived in Guatemala City yesterday and took a 3 hour bus ride to a town on Lago Atitlan, San Marcos. After a late arrival at our house we had a delicious dinner and had a good nights rest. This morning we took a short walk down to where we saw breathtaking views of the lake. We learned the importance of staying in a group and how we can all benefit from helping each other.

We will soon be moving on to our homestay families. This is probably the part I am most excited about-to really be a part of their culture and to experience it first hand rather than simply reading about their traditions and lifestyle in books and magazines. This will be a great experience - both improving our Spanish and learning new things beyond the classroom.

The group of 15 that we have, 12 students and 3 leaders, is an amazing variety of people from the East and the West. Everyone is really excited to be here - to really learn Spanish and walk away from this summer with a new understanding of Guatemalan culture.

It´s kinda funny how, when you revisit aold topic, old culture, or an old country you´ve visited before with different people, it becomes entirely new. I learned this on my arrival to Guatemala, having spent 2 spring breaks here in the past.

When I first arrived to theGuatemala Cityairport, for some reason, I had an expectation that the same people that I had met at the airport my first time here would still be there. I scanned the crowd over and over to discover that this familiarity I thought I had with the country itself could be voided out in a matter of minutes. New faces, new personalities, but most of all new hopes created images in my head, as I realized that theentire country wasn´t something that could be captured in a two week period.

At theMiami airport, Michael asked the group what we were excited for and what we were nervous for, as a promptfor some of ourYak Yaks today. With the expectations I had then, I brushed it off entirely. Yet, after I arrived, I was faced with a new nerve-wracking thought: what if my view of Guatemala before was changed? After consulting and reconsultingthe idea, I was able to finally figure out the answer to the questions that Michael had asked earlier. My nervousness now was fueled by the new uncertainty that the country offers, and my excitement revolves around a completely new experience altogether.

Well, I suppose I´ve overextended my stay at this little internet cafe in San Marcos, so I must go. Wow, that´s one longjournal entry.

We arrived here yesterday, at around 8¨30 PM. It was dark when we got off the boat, and we had to climb up to our hostel. Once we got there, we were immediately taken with the place. It was gorgeous, and the nature around the house was beautiful. We had a delicious dinner, cooked for us by the owners of the hostel. Our trip had finally started, and we were all so happy to be here.

This summer, I am incredibly excited to become immersed in a culture which is very different from mine. Although I have done quite a bit of traveling, I have never been somewhere for an entire month. I look forward to being a traveler, instead of a tourist, and to experiencing the daily lives of people in a developing country.

The aspect of the trip which I am most nervous about are the homestays. Although I am looking forward to them, I am slightly uncomfortable with the idea of moving in with stangers. That said, I´m sure it will be an exciting experience.

One of my main goals this summer is to learn a lot of Spanish, so that I will be able to better communicate with people here and with spanish speakers in America. I also hope to become more confident and more willing to try new things.

In order to make this summer as meaningful and as incredible as I know it can be, I will have to be extremely open. I will need to make an effort to step outside of my comfort zone, and to push myself. In the weeks before I came here, I was slightly anxious about the trip. Now that I am here, it is wonderful. Although I was overwhelmed at first, I am now escatic. I am so glad I came, and I know that it will be a difficult, rigorous, fascinating, and amazing experience.

Hello everyone!

Michael, Adelaide, and I have been working hard to put together a great course for you. We are getting ready to meet you in Miami. We are excited! We just have a few reminders before you get all packed. You do not need to bring a sleeping pad unless you feel you need one. We would rather that you did not bring an Ipod nor a cell phone. We will have a cell phone for you to use in the airport or you can bring a calling card. We will see you soon!

A quick question:

Now that the itinerary is set, do you forsee any great need to bring an inflatable sleeping pad on the trip?

Thanks,

Hi guys! I'm Hanna. I live in Alpine, New Jersey a small town outside of New York City. I go to the Horace Mann school in the city. I just finished my sophmore year. Currently I'm a day camp counselor at my old school, Nightingale-Bamford, which is also in New York City. I love working with kids, I'm also a middle school mentor, peer tutor, and a student ambassador (where I tour perspective families around the school) during the year. I play field hockey, which I absolutely love, and I also play lacrosse for my school. My favorite subjects are History, Spanish, and Art History. I've been taking Spanish for about 5 years. Last year I went to Spain and did a homestay program in a town in sourthern Spain - Conil and I had an absolutely phenomenal time.

hasta pronto!

hanna :)

Hola todos,

My name is Jessie. I just finished my freshman year at New Trier High School, a public school just north of Chicago. I suppose here's where I tell you some interests of mine. I really enjoy math and Spanish, listening to music, sampling music on iTunes/playing guitar into the wee hours, playing lacrosse, and sleeping (but I guess thats somewhat of a natural interest, right?). Anyways, I'm really excited for the trip. A bit nervous, but I've been to Guate twice before, so that will probably fizzle out by the time I arrive back there. Hmmm...oh! Here are a few bands/artists I like- Counting Crows, REM, Death Cab, RHCP, KT Tunstall, the Rocket Summer, Damien Rice, Iron and Wine, Fink, Sublime, Jackson 5, Bob Marley, Basement Jaxx, Radiohead, the Kooks, the Beatles, Guster, Paramore, and Jack's Mannequin. I'm forgetting quite a few, but you know, if you are fans of any of them, comment please. I like recommendations too, and am always looking for new music.

Well, there's my introduction. I'm impressed that you've gotten this far.

-Jessie Serrino

PS- Jarabe de Palo is a great band if you like jam bands. If you're a music nerd like me, and know what I'm talking about, look up Bonito.

You're all getting ready for your upcoming adventure: getting gear, obsessively looking at pictures of Guatemala, reading articles (check out www.prensalibre.com) and imagining yourself having a truly amazing summer. Try and spend a few minutes in the midst of all that thinking about your Independent Study Project (ISPs).

ISPs sometimes freak students out, but there's no need to get stressed. These are designed to help you have a deeper understanding of a particular aspect of Guatemalan life and culture. You get to pick your topic and pursue your curiosity with boldness and enthusiasm. We'll help you choose a good topic and make connections with people, but the success of your ISP is really up to you. That's the independent part and what makes it truly unique. You'll spend time throughout our journey talking to people about your topic and towards the end of the trip we'll have some time for you to educate us all about what you have learned. This is NOT your typical school project. It's about your interest, your experience and your ideas, and you'll be free to make the most of it.

We'll talk in the first week about your topics, but consider what you might be interested in before we leave. Do you like food and want to learn about agriculture or cooking? Are you interested in music and want to learn traditional dance or marimba? Are you concerned about attitudes toward the environment? Medicinal plants? Birds? The Civil War? Current Maya culture? The Mayan Calendar? The immigrant experience en el Norte?

As you have ideas, feel free to kick them around here. We'll take ISPs seriously, but again, don't stress out. You'll see that it can be really fun and a great way to add to your experience.

Your Dream Team leaders are headed up to the mountains starting on Monday for about 10 days. We'll have intermittent internet access, though, so feel free to post questions here as they come up.

Nos vemos en Miami...

Hey Dream Team,

I am putting together my backpack and I thought I would let you know what books I am bringing so you can take it into consideration as you are packing. For language learning I am bringing:

  • 501 Spanish Verbs,
  • A good spanish textbooks that covers it all and is great for one on one learning,
  • A spanish grammar drill book with a ton of exercises,
  • Breaking out of Beginner Spanish, and
  • An intermediate reader for more advanced spanish.
  • El Sobrino del Mago CS Lewis

Of course, they are for you to use as often as you want (and copy as needed) as we embark on a month of language immursion.

And I also have three novels to trade around.

So when you see me wearing the same outfit everyday, you will know why:)

See you soon,

Rebecca
