[post_content] => We have just returned from a lovely and magical day at Tikal. Once again we were graced by the weather gods. The students have been working hard planning out and prepping for our last week of the trip. Tomorrow at 4:45am we head out for a journey down to Raxruja where we will spend the afternoon exploring and hopefully intertubing through caves. The next two days will be spent in a small town called Carolina (or so we have been told :) we have been invited to paint a map mural in the town school. On wed we will travel down to Chichi where we will explore the market on Thursday. Then on fri and sat we will be up in the lovely Earth Lodge retreat having disorientation while viewing several volcanos, walking among ripe avocado trees, eating family-style meals, and taking Chujs--a local sauna bath. We will conclude with our last day and night in the lovely Colonial town of Antigua. I doubt we will have internet access over the next few days but as soon as we are within reach, students will be posting Yaks. until then...

Yo soy Keyrie. I am 14 years old. I wake up at around 5 every morning, get ready for school and help my younger brothers get ready as well. Then I help my mom make breakfast and spend time with my dad. I go to secondary school, wear a uniform and come home to eat lunch and spend time with my family around noon. I love to swim and I go to dance classes regularly. I am super stoked for my quincineara next year, and I love dancing and music.

Yo soy Edgeduardo. I am 8 years old. I also wake up early and have breakfast with my family before going to school in my uniform. I love to play, and am almost always outside playing in the street with my friends. I´m super sweet and adorable.

Yo soy Juan Jose. I am 10 years old. I go to the same school as my younger brother, but I am far more studious than he. I am a lot shy-er, also. I love playing with our pet parrot Shakira.

Yo soy Siomara. I am the mother of the family. I am 38 years old. I wake up, cook for my family and occasionally eat breakfast with them. Practically all I do is clean and cook. I am an excellent cook. I am so nice, and I laugh a lot. I don´t often leave the house, though.

Yo soy Juan. I am the father of the family. I am 42 years old. I broke my leg this spring, and I´m still recovering. I love to fish. I work every day, but I come home for lunch, and eat every meal with my family. I love helping my kids with their homework and just hanging out with them.

Yo soy mi familia. We are some of the happiest people ever. We are always laughing and smiling and friendly. We don´t care that our home is slightly rudimentary and there is barely any privacy, because we love everyone. We rock like crazy.

PS. San Jose is the bomb. Like x2.

hello, my name is Fausto Cortez, i live in San Jose, Guatemala with a loving family. although i am quite small i am thirteen years old and am very different from your ordinary guatemalan thirteen year old. when i was four years old my mother and father passed away. since then i am living in my aunt´s house with a whopping 14 other people.

about me. i am a quiet kid really who knows not much outside of my small world in san jose guatemala. i have never heard of mcdonalds and i go to the bathroom in a hole in the ground. i go to school with kids much bigger than me from 1 to 5 in the afternoon. i seem like an ordinary kid but if you get to know me there is much more behind my timid mask. i have a natural slight slur in speech so its a little hard to understand me but once you get to know me, its easy. i am always willing to have fun and play whatever game anyone proposes. i mostly hang out with my little sisters migdalia and jania, not because i have to, just because they are much more fun than your average thirteen year old boy. i live simply by the word of my aunt aned uncle, helping them at their everry need and doing whatever possible to make my presence in their house and comfortable as possible. i am not selfish and am very open to hear a story, or whatever anyne has to say. although i know not much beyond my simple life, that is a good thing because as for me, life in guatemala is great and i am very happy with my position.

[post_content] => My name is Mary, and I am a pregnant mother of one living in San Jose, El Peten, Guatemala. Every day I wake up early, but after sunrise (which is more than most Guatemaltecos can say). I prepare breakfast for my family while my husband and four-year-old son wake up and come into the kitchen. By about seven o´clock, everyone has eaten and I clean the used plates, cups, and silverware. I also put the stack of leftover tortillas from breakfast in a plastic bag, so they will stay warm for the rest of the day. With this done, I rest for a while, laying a towel over my swollen legs, a reminder of the baby to come. Having rested. I do a load of laundry and hang it up to dry, hoping that it won´t rain for a while. If it does, I´ll have to take ir all down, and wait for the storm to pass. I rest for a longer while in the afternoon, maybe finding time for a short nap, until it is time to make lunch for myself and my son. My husband is long gone to the neighboring town to work, and won´t be bck until dinner. After lunch is eaten and cleaned up, I play with my four-year-old and rest some more until it´s time to make dinner. I take some food to the neighboring house to share, knowing that tomorrow it will be their turn to do the same. Finally, the whole family turns in, and I fall asleep quickly, knowing that there´s another full day ahead.

I get up at 6 or so, most weekdays, wash last night's dishes [NB -- from my highly representative sampling of 2 families, this seems to be the norm in Guatemala because of water accessibility], feed the chickens, all that; then I have breakfast, help Abuela, sweep the kitchen. Some mornings I get to help wake up and dress Joelito, but usally his mother insists on doing that. The rest of the day? I work around the house, helping Abuela, running down to the tienda. Or I play with Joelito, or teach him to count, work on reading. Of course I talk to friends on my cell phone; sometimes we'll go somewhere during the day, or Tia Lucia and her kids will come over, or another cousin.

Things have been like this for 6 or 7 years, I guess -- before that I went to school, but now I work at home, since Tia Celia doesn't. I help Abuela with dinner, then after dinner we all relax in the living room, watch TV, usually, or play with Joelito; sometimes we go to church in the evenings with Tia Lucia; I talk with friends, shower, go to bed.

Written from the perspective of the family rooster¨

Every morning, I wake up at five so that I can get everybody else in the family up. I hop up onto the fence, open my mouth, and say¨cockadoodledooo!¨ The mother and father get up first. The father goes down to the tienda and the mother prepares breakfast for the rest of the family. Mmm, pancakes. Then the two sisters and their niñas get up. Everybody sits around the table and has breakfast. Then the day begins.

The mother stays around the house, doing chores. She washes dishes and prepares dinner. The father comes home at one, for lunch and a siesta, before going out to his night job. One of the sisters stays home and takes care of the children, who are 5 and 2, not old enough to go to school. The other sister has a job at the primary school, and returns at five.

At around 7 o´clock, the whole family eats dinner. They usually have tortillas, rice, and frijoles volteados. They sit and share their stories of the day. Then they all go to bed. I go to sleep and wait for the next morning.

My name is Olga, I am 19 years old and I work for the Avila family in San Jose. I arrive early in the morning around 6:30am and cook breakfast or clean. There are not many families in San Jose that can afford a ¨maid, but the Avila´s have a refrigerator, a washing machine, and a shower. When the kids or family members want something they tell me to get it, and with Gringo in the house this week I have to make sure things are extra-comfortable. They are a nice family, though, and while I´m cooking I talk to Lucita, the mother. But no one ever says thank you (except the Gringo) and while every other family makes ther own tortillas I cook theres. I live on the other side of San Jose up lots of hills with my parents and brothers that I (probably) have to support. This job is not ideal, I work until 5pm, and since english was my favorite class is school I would like to be working in the US, but I maintain a positive attitude and do my job well.

the first part of this is an assignment for the instructors. mario is my homestay brother.

so my name is mario and i live in san jose. i am 20 years old and i have graduated highschool. my dad died a few years ago so i need to help support the family so i am a mechanic at an autoshop in the mornings and i study to become a teacher in the afternoons. the school i graduated from offers programs to help their alumni become teahcer certified so when i finish that, i will be able to teach at the school and make more money. my house is nice enough, and there´s always enough food on the table. san jose is a really nice and relaxed place so i am glad that i live here. i have it better than a lot of people, although i still have to work very hard to make end´s meat.

so san jose is pretty sweet, im really enjoying my stay here. every single day we go to lessons, and play games and stuff. then we eat lunch and then swim and we get sarita, their ice cream store, at least once a day. sometimes its twice, and on rare occasions, thrice. i feel like im on vacation. the past few days have gone by really fast, and the next week will also because were doing a whole lot of traveling. still need to by all my souvenirs, but ill do it in antigua i think. i still have only taken like a total of about $50 from the atm account so thats good. except for last night when i was wakened at like 3:30 in the morning by the sound of birds dive bombing the tin roof and squaking loudly while a cat was meowing on the top of its lungs, i sleep well. having a fun. guatemala is good.

I am Sandy, my 20year old sister

Every morning I wake up to unbareable heat

I sit down and eat breakfast on a wooden seat

Usually consisting of fruit oof some kind

Or something that I always have in mind

I talk with mami and papi

thn lay in the hammock and watch TV

At 1 I put on my school girl uniform and gel my hair up high

The go down my steep hill and wait for a ride

To school i go where i love to teach

Educating niños is my goal and reach

An exhausting but fun day

Now in bed I lay

Watching the sun go down

In San Jose my lovely town

[post_content] => I am Suly, a 22 year old mother and wife living in San Jose, Peten, Guatemala. Ive been living with my husband for 2 years and our son - Jhostin, who is 1 year and 7 months. I wake up very early in the morning to wash the clothes and prepare breakfast for my husband, Edwar. I spend my days doing house work and seeling food and drinks from my tienda (store) and people come by asking for cocas, galletas (cookies), or huevos (eggs). The sun starts to beat down on us and by the time is lunch its scorching. I run back and forth from my mothers house, which is right next dorr, to get tortillas of corn from her for lunch. I prepare the rice, chicken, spaghetti, or whatever else I have. I eat with Edwar and Jhostin and sometimes a few of my nieces, of which i have over 20 of. We share stories from our day, make jokes, and watch Jhostin helplessly try to eat his food. After I clean up and bring in the clean clothes, that had been drying on the line all day. I can finally rest and watch TV with my husband and son. We watch my sons favorites cartoons, like Barney. Ive learned the tunes to many of the songs. Before I know it, its time for dinner and I begin to prepare dinner - beans, vegetables, or meat. We sit at the table and eat a plesant dinner as the sun goes down. I clean up and leave the dishes for tomorrow as another day awaits me. I tidy up and spend time with my family in front of the TV, or lying in the hammock. I turn off the lights but my son would rather watch TV or play with his toys. He begins to cry and get angry until he finally falls quietly asleep until the sun rises and I begin my beautiful day with my lovely family once again.
