I now sit in the beautiful town of antigua as our group spends the lasting hours in guatemala. it has been a truly awesome trip as i have experienced and accoplished so many different things. there are some people that really helped this summer away happen and without them i would have still been a normal kid from california sitting through his lazy summer. i truly feel like will return a much different person with more knowledge about the outside world and different perspectives on global and local issues. i want to thank mom and dad for allowing their 16 year old son to leave for a month during the summer. i also want to thank my sister for coming up with the idea and always being there to talk to whether it be guatemala or other matters. also my friends for being supportive and accepting of the fact that i won´t see them for a month. i have really grown as a person during this what seems like a short month. thank you so much to all the people that allowed this to happen as i am very grateful for all you have done.

its almost my last day in guatemala and im jus thinking about how lucky i am to have such a great life and such a wonderful family and the privelage to have had as an amazing a trip as this one has been. i also want to thank th group, they are some of the coolest people i have ever met and they have made this trip absolutedly excellent. i have had so mu8ch fun and i have learned a ridiculous amount of new things and i dont think it would have been possible if the people i were with hadnt created such a great atmosphere and mad this trip so wonderful. thanks also to the leaders, they have my utmost respect and i know that they worked reaklly hard to plan out this trip and make it as fantasic as it was. there´s no way we would have done it wihout them. they taught us so many things and gave me so many new perspectives on life. and my family too. i definately wouldnt hav gone on this trip without their encouragement and their support. thanks for emailing me all the time, its great to know that people care and want to know what im up to and how im doing.

muchas gracias por todos

Now that we have reached our final day here in Guatemala, I´d like to thank everyone who made this unforgettable, life-changing experience possible for me this summer. Firstly, of course, come my parents. Mom and Dad, you made all of this possible through your hard work, endless patience, and deep pockets. I would never have even considered a summer trip like this, much less Dragons, unless the idea had been put into my head by you guys. Thank you so, so very much.

Secondly, I´d like to thank the instructors for this trip: Adelaide, Rebecca, and Michael. You made a potentially terrifying experience into something that I could enjoy, cherish, and learn from immensely. Thank you for never letting me fall.

Thirdly, I´d like to thank everyone in the group: India, Hanna, Logan, Sam, Sabrina, Dillon, Reid, Cassandra, Jessie, Emily, and Nora. You all made this trip 12 times better than it ever could hav been, and got me to places I´d never been before. ¨You guys rock.¨

Thanks in advance to my family in LA for taking me in as I decompress from this trip. Dealing with me is gonna be wierd.

A last thanks to all of the lovely Guatemaltecos that I have come in contact with over this trip. Your hospitality, friendliness, and willingness to wish a total stranger buenos dias never stopped being a delight.

Thanks again, from the very bottom of my heart.

As this is our final yakyak, we were instructed to just give thanks to everyone that made this trip awesome, a task which I plan to do with as much gusto as I can.

OK, first of all, thanks to my parents. WOW, you guys made this possible. Thank you for letting me go to this awesome place and understanding how important it was and is for me to see the world. I think I´ve gained a new knowledge which will help me be stronger and help me change the world.

Thanks to my sisters, for inspiration and love. I think of you two everyday single day, especially because of that awesome email you sent me at the beginning of the trip (oh, and dad, thanks for that awesome email too).

Thanks to the leaders. Thanks to Michael for your tough love that made me face things on my own. Thanks to Adelaide for playing along with my absolute ridiculousness and bringing my mood up every time I talk to you. Thanks to Rebecca for your gentle compassion, and that really awesome strict tone you get when I´m in space-land.

Thanks to my group. I can be pretty eccentric sometimes and I´m really glad you guys try to accept me as much as you can, though I know it can be hard.

Finally, thanks to Guatemala and all those who will probably never read this. Thanks to my families in Pa´chaj and San Jose. Thanks to the ayudante on the bus a few days ago who let me sit in the seat with the most leg room. Thanks to the woman who let me watch her praying in the church in ChiChi. Thanks to Armando for his countless inspirational speeches. Thanks to the countless Guatemalans who have greeted me with ¨Buenos¨ or ¨Adios.¨

Ok, probably my longest work of yakyaking yet.

Gratefully yours, Reid Jenkins

Thank you to Guatemala, for this month --

and, yes, thank you to America, to home. To BB, particular gratitude, for the incredible gift of Spanish. To those at home who paid and prepared and said goodbye and let me go to this place called Guatemala, this summer I turned sixteen, for a month: alone, but with your constant good wishes and love.

Thank you to Dragons; to those in the office who work all year with papers and plans and precautions; to years and years of past experiences and incredible contacts; of course, of course to the leaders for a tireless month of support and inspiration. To my fellow students, for jumping in here as clueless as I was and laughing the whole way alongside me.

And above all, thank you to Guatemala; to your vistas and mud and mountains and jungle and mosquitoes; to your tortillas and tamales and pica mas and huevos revueltos and chocobananos and beans from a can; to your tuc-tucs and chicken buses and micros and potholes and ayudantes and pick-ups and swerving curves and absurdist, wonderful driving; to your pilas and outhouses and concrete floors and metal doors; to your traje and textiles and markets and guipiles and cintas and cortes and fajas and color; and most, most of all, thank you to your people. Thank you to every kid I talked to in the plaza of a crowded market; thank you to the man in San Marcos with whom I had my first Spanish coversation; to the tienda owner weaving a guipil in Chajul; to Armando, for your unending inspiration and passion; to Angel, Leonza, and Bety, the wonderful family I was a part of for five days that feel like much longer; to Cecilia, the school in Xix, my dance partner, the girl who let me weave two inches on her faja; to my San Jose family, especially to Joel, for your constant energy and creativity; to every single student in Carolina who played soccer and painted South America and took a whack at my birthday pinata; to Domingo, for the clearest Spanish ever and a great tour of Tikal; to Cesar, photographer extraordinaire, guide to one of the best days of my life, procurer of fantastic banana bread; to everyone whose name I never learned, but with whom I exchanged a conversation or a bargaining or just a "Buenas tardes," or even just a smile and a wave from the back of a pickup; to everyone, everyone in this beautiful country, and to Guatemala herself, muchas, muchissimas gracias.

Dear Mom, Dad, Rebecca Gourevitch, Senor Gomez, Adelaide Rebecca B, Michael, Hanna, India, Sabrina, Reid, Dillon, Sam, Emily, Cassandra, Gabe, Jessie, and Logan, thank you for all you have given me. When this trip began it seemed like a month would never end, and now, with only hours left to be with one another, and enjoy Guatemala it is hard to believe it really has been 28 days. Throughout this trip we have talked about giving thanks, something I think is easy to forget among a world of privelage; I am thankful for being here, for the people who have taken us into their homes, the food we have eaten, the opportunities we have had, but I am also thankful to have come here in the first place. Embarking on a Dragons trip is not something I could have decided on my own, and those who supported me, despite doubts and fears, gave me my first big step into this journey. And so, now that I have been here, and can look back and recognize those who guided me to take bigger steps, it is impossible for me to imagine this trip without my peers; relating to another person about being homesick, or how much diarrhoea you have, or how much fun this is, makes every experience more special. Likewise, without the guidance of my leaders, their own stories about traveling, their protection, their jokes, and their caring role, I would have felt lost and sometimes helpless and always unsure of myself and my surroundings. I hope I can remember to be thankful at home, to realize all that I am given, all that I am exposed to, and all that I am never lacking.

Nora

Now, with only 2 days left in the trip were all starting to reflect back on our experiences here and how much weve learned, grown, and matured. Weve met so many new people, learned about so many new topics, and experienced so many things we could have never at home. These four weeks have been an amazing journey as all 12 students and 3 leaders have grown very close and fell in love with so many aspects of Guatemala. Whether it be the hours and hours of travel, the beautiful landscape, or the generous people we have all seen so many new things.

To my homestay family in Pachaj and San Jose, thank you for all the wonderful things youve taught me, all the delicious meals youve served, and the amazing time you let me have. My two families were very different as my one in Pachaj had a mother an aunt and a 7 year old son, and my San Jose homestay had a very young couple with a 1 year old son. Weve shared so many stories, and they were always so enthusiastic to learn about my life back at home. Thank you to all the guest speakers who have shared with us their very personal experiences during the war. Thank you to the teachers who Ive spent 20 hours each other, talking about daily life and improving my conversational skills. To all my friends and family at home who have reassured me that I would get through these 4 weeks no matter what, they are the reason I am here and doing as well as I am. Finally, there are so many people that Ive met, both from the group and Guatemala that there are no words to say how thankful I am to have come to this beautiful country and return home with a new set of eyes, as one might say, on so many topics.

Thank you everyone for letting me do this trip. After Michael talked to us, I realized how many people really made this happen for me. I suppose this is optimal time for people who made this possible.

I'd like to thank my parents for really pushing me to try something new. This one really worked guys.

I'd like to thank Carl Becker for writing what was probably a KILLER recommendation.

I'd like to thank the leader team for being there, yet opening the playing field to a bunch of new oppurtunities and discussions that I would not have experienced had they not been there.

I'd like to thank the group for really being there for me. I honestly would not have had so much fun had I not been with you all.

And finally, I'd like to thank dragons in general for operating such a killer trip. I really appreciate the work you guys are doing.

Well, I must go experience my final times in guatemala. See some of you in a few days.

Thank you everyone for letting me do this trip. After Michael talked to us, I realized how many people really made this happen for me. I suppose this is optimal time for people who made this possible. I’d like to thank my parents for really pushing me to try something new. This one really worked […]

Our adventure in Guatemala is finally coming to a close. We have all learned so much, and have so much to be thankful for. Mom and Dad, thank you so much for sending me here. Without you I'd never be here. Thanks to my teachers for writing my recommendations, and to Rebecca Gourevitch for telling me about this trip. Also, thanks to the leaders and the group for being awesome and making the trip so much fun. Thanks everyone who wrote to me during the trip and asked how I was doing, I loved getting your emails.

Also, thank you Guatemala. I have loved living in this country for the past month, and the people have been so warm and friendly. I have learned so much from them, and loved it so much. I'm so grateful to have had this experience!

Last week, while Hanna was at in San Jose, Peten, Guatemala she was living with her family of 3. Every night the family ate meals together and shared experiences about their lives. They sat around the kitchen/dining area eating their beans, rice, and tortillas laughing about each others stories. On Thursday the 17th, Hanna, and the house mother, Suly, made empanadas with her many nieces and nephews. Hanna made most of the empanadas with potatoes and beans as two girls, Emili and Angeles, and one boy Alessandro stood around eagerly awaiting her emapanadas. The first few came out rather small and skinny, but as they say practice makes perfect. Hanna and Suly were making empanada after empanada and they were sharing stories about Sulys life as a child and Hannas life at home. Dinner was ready and Suly, Hanna, and the father Edwar sat around the table outside eating the delicious empanadas. They talked for hours about music, food, education, transportation, and so many other topics. Spanish seemed to be the primary language for everyone as there were no awkward pauses and not too many miscomunnincations. It was a memorable moment for both the family and Hanna. She was the first host ¨daugther¨they had, and this conversation was something both the family and Hanna will remember.
