So I'm finally in LA and meeting the group and I've been asked to answer some questions so here it goes.

1) What are you most excited about for the trip?

Well there's a lot to be excited about but if I had to say one thing I'd say seeing Angkor Wat since I've heard its amazing. Also jungle treking sounds like a lot of fun.

2)What are you most nervous about?

I'm most nervous about the fact that I don't know what I should expect since I've never been to Asia before. Even though I'm sure it'll be amazing, I guess the fear of the unknown kicks in.

3)What can you contribute to making this an amazing trip?

I hope that I can be positive about things in general so that everybody can have an amazing time.

You know that shaky-shaky feeling you get when you know you are coming up on something really amazing? That feeling just hit me. I touched down in Los Angeles about twenty minutes ago, and am in the process of meeting my new friends for the next six weeks. This is where the trip really starts taking form-- in the greeting stage.

What am I most excited about? I am excited that when I arrive in Cambodia, the people and the land will offer me a new perspective that just completely blows away everything that I know. I want to have my reality flipped on its back!

What am I most nervous about? I'm a tiny bit nervous that this stubborn cough that I've had for a week now just won't go away. What bad timing for something like this to happen! I'll manage.

What do I need to make this the BEST summer ever? I need to know that EVERYTHING I do in Cambodia will somehow contribute to the person I will be for the rest of my life. That's what's awesome about travel; one takes everything from their experience even after they leave.

My next Yak Yak will hopefully be sometime in the next week or two. By then, the shaky-shakies will be in full force!

I'm on the other coast, in beautiful California, 5 hours away from home. But I'm still in America, just on the consistently warmer and more sunny side. It's one flight down in a series of 3.

I've been asked what I am the most exited about. And what I'm the most nervous about. It's a tough question, in all it's simplicity. I have the same answer for both: the homestay. I have never lived with another family, let alone one in another country, of another culture. Family is what all humans have in common; it's the fabric of society. It's also the most intimate and personal structure. To be embraced by and live with another family is as scary as it is poignant. It's as exicting as it is nerve-racking. But together it's amazing. I want to experience this.

How will I make this the best summer it can possibly be? Well, I'll start by leaving America behind , and with it I'll leave all expectations and assumptions. I'll have a tabula rasa of sorts, and I'll absorb and embrace and experience and love and remember and witness.

With less than 24 hours until our final flight to Phnom Phen (hoping all goes well) I'm really feeling excited about this experience. I'm excited to learn about Cambodia not by reading my "Lonely Planet" guidebook or the "CIA Factbook," but rather by experiencing the country hands on; being truly exposed to learn about the countries politics, geography, food, language, culture, economy, etc. At the same time I am a little nervous. Mostly about meeting 12 people I'm going to spend the next 6 weeks with, like it or not (although I'm very confident that it will be a great group). Finally, I'm posed with the question: what do I need to do on this trip in order to make this the best experience possible? My answer, be open. Be open to everything.

(this is for my worried parents)

I would like to now say that my flight went well I'm fine.

    [post_content] => Hey everyone,

I have arrived safely in Los Angeles and met the leader team. I am really excited to be heading back to a country I love so much. I am most excited to brush the rust off of my Khmer and go to the marketplace again. There is nothing that kick starts interaction like talking in the marketplace for a few hours. I am most nervous, however, in a very similar manner. Without totally immersing myself, I can't really be sure how much of my Khmer still works the way I remember. No matter what happens, I am going to put one foot in front of the other and go the marketplace, because no matter how nervous or excited I am about my language skills and etiquette, there is really no way to find out until I try. That is what I want to do this trip, step outside of my comfort zone and learn as much as I can by immersing myself as much as I can. If I do this successfully, I don't think anything could stop this trip from being fantastic.

Oh the places you'll (I'll) go!

HELLO!!! Greetings from the Sierra Nevada's Dragons orientation. We'vebeen hard at work the last week training and planning for this amazing journey we are about to embark on. I just wanted to check in while we have internet very briefly and let you all know that we are VERY excited to meet you very soon!

Just a few packing reminders that we really want to stress:

polite conservative clothing for both males and females

cell phones, ipods, etc can be left behind

SMALLbottles of toiletries

a spirit of adventure and an open mind!

Can't wait to meet you in LA!

Hi two quick questions:

1. How much money should I bring and should it be cash or travelers checks?

2. What kind of gifts can I bring for homestay families and how many gifts do I need?

Can't wait to get going how long is it now two and a half weeks?

Hi two quick questions: 1. How much money should I bring and should it be cash or travelers checks? 2. What kind of gifts can I bring for homestay families and how many gifts do I need? Can’t wait to get going how long is it now two and a half weeks?

Greetings Dragons!

Exciting news.

We may have the opportunity to do a trek into the Samlaut region of the Cardamom mountains from the town of Pailin in western Cambodia with rangers from the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation.

Samlaut is one of the most remote regions of Cambodia and is very close to Thailand. There are numerous rare species of wildlife in the forests, including tigers and Asiatic bears. Trekking in this region is a rare opportunity, and may not be possible due to monsoon conditions.

To make this trek happen, all of us need to be in good mental and physical shape, and be willing to go with the flow if weather conditions make the trails impassable.

Please be sure to excercise in the weeks leading up to departure, and really make an effort to enrich your understanding of Cambodia by studying the course prep materials. All of your instructors are absolutely thrilled to meet you, and one of us will be getting in touch by phone soon!

Best,

Tim
