We experienced our first real Cambodian rain storm yesterday. The rain was amazing - exciting, energizing, restorative. Lots of lightening and bone-shattering thunder - just what a rain storm should be. We were inside of our little tuk-tuk with all of the flaps pulled down tightly rumbling down the muddy road. It has been my experience so far that tuk-tuk rides are some of the best time for great conversation...

We visited the Choeung Ek Killing Fields yesterday morning. I couldn't help noticing that beautiful little purple flowers were growing at the site of one of the mass graves... the juxtaposition of death and new life so close by.

Yesterday we traveled to a village just outside Pnom Penh, here we ate lunch with a family and learned some of the basics about Cambodian Culture. (education, marriage, etc.) We also visited the Killing Fields, this was a very powerful expierence. Knowing that over 17,000 people were killed where you are standing is very powerful. It makes you wonder why any one would do such a thing, especially in such a brutal manner. The expierence was even more powerful because our guide was here during the time of the Khmer Rouge, but escaped from the city.

Dear Parents/friends

Today the leaders have asked us to post a yak-yak as part of a scavenger hunt through Phnom Penh. Since I posted yesterday I don't have that muchmore to say. This morning we visited the Tuol Seng prison which is an excellent museum of Khmer Rouge atrocities. We also had a Khmer lesson with Mara.

The scavenger hunt is for sure going to be a blast. The leaders have put a lot of effort into planning this activity.

Hope to be able to post soon!

Safe and sound, here we are in Cambodia. I'm typing in an internet cafe near O'Russei market in Phnom Penh. The power is out in this part of the city now, and a generator hums on the sidewalk outside. Moto-bikes, tuk tuks and luxury black Land Cruisers with military license plates flow past the window - no power means no traffic lights, and every intersection is a chaotic blend of horns and dust and exhaust.

"There are so many juxtapositions here," said Sam on the drive in from the airport, and she's right on - billboards advertising whiskey loom above old women wearing krama scarfs who sell fresh squeezed sugarcane juice, fancy new villas under construction amidst wooden shacks. Smell of sewage, smell of papaya, smell of gasoline.

We've met Mara, our in-country instructor, and Thy, a friend of Allana's who will guide us to his village tomorrow to enjoy a traditional Khmer meal with village elders - after our pilgrimage to the Killing Fields.

This afternoon Mara has arranged for us to recieve blessings for safe travel from monks at his temple here in Phnom Penh.

The schedule is packed, but right now it's wonderful to take a moment and reflect, and give thanks for our health and good fortune thus far. We're all well and happy and looking forward to everything to come.

Thanks for reading, everyone! Best wishes.

10 eager students and 3 excited instructors woke up this morning and acknowledged that today was the day we finally meet each other and start the first leg of this amazing journey. For months both students and instructors alike have been planning, researching and networking to prepare for this very day.

Throughout the day students trickled in to introduce themselves and share their excitement, nervousness and goals (check out their yakyaks!). In a nearby park we played name games and completed a few team building exercises in preparation for our adventure together. We are about to head to LA airport together to head to Hong Kong and finally Phnom Penh. We will all try to post another yakyak within the first few days on the ground.

Thank you to everyone who has made this summer happen! I have the pleasure of travelling with an amazing group of students this summer!

Discovering a new culture, a new lifestyle, and a new outlook on the visual arts. I can't wait to submerge myself in the art of this beautiful land. What am I most nervous about? Honestly, trekking through really humid jungles--but I know I'll be fine and learn a lot about myself as well as my new peers through our six weeks together. We are all so fortunate to be able to have this rare opportunity to be in Cambodia with such a diverse group of people for six full weeks. In order to make this the best summer, I believe we all have to believe in each other, talk, tell stories, and laugh. ashton

[post_content] => The first question I was asked was definitely the easiest. All I had to say was what excited me the most about a trip to Cambodia; a country in a continent where I had never set foot. Well that answer seemed apparent immediately. I didn't need to be excited about any one thing; it was just the anticipation of going somewhere new. Beyond what I was told from this person or that and the history of the region itself I had, and still don't, no idea what to expect and that alone excited me. I, however, have also been asked to name what I am most nervous about; something I have been trying not to think about. I suppose this is the more important question to answer. In answering it I may hope to overcome the very thing I'm afraid of. I think really everyone has one similar fear: chance. Every person here has taken a huge chance by applying to go, each person is putting some, if not every, aspect of themselves out in the open. The potential strength that could stem from overcoming any fear, however, makes it worth it.

Description

The first question I was asked was definitely the easiest. All I had to say was what excited me the most about a trip to Cambodia; a country in a continent where I had never set foot. Well that answer seemed apparent immediately. I didn’t need to be excited about any one thing; it was […]

[post_content] => I'd have to say that most of my excitement revolves around Cambodian food. I am a firm believer in the idea that one learns vast amounts of information about a culture simply by trying the food. The second most exciting aspect is definitely learning some Khmer! Interestingly enough, in spite of my enthusiasm for the food, this is also where my single fear lies. I consider it a legitimate fear because it is not fear of something that might happen. It is fear of something that will happen: food poisoning! But hey, thats the price you pay for good food, eh? Even when things are going a bit rough I have a good attitude that I think will help me through any and every obstacle (even the food!). After 6 hours of flying, I regret this post isn't extremely extensive. That said, I am very excited for the following flight (which dwarfs the one from this morning)!

So I'm finally in LA and meeting the group and I've been asked to answer some questions so here it goes.

1) What are you most excited about for the trip?

Well there's a lot to be excited about but if I had to say one thing I'd say seeing Angkor Wat since I've heard its amazing. Also jungle treking sounds like a lot of fun.

2)What are you most nervous about?

I'm most nervous about the fact that I don't know what I should expect since I've never been to Asia before. Even though I'm sure it'll be amazing, I guess the fear of the unknown kicks in.

3)What can you contribute to making this an amazing trip?

I hope that I can be positive about things in general so that everybody can have an amazing time.
