[post_content] => Dear Family and Friends,

The students and their teachers are on the plane back to the U.S.!

We had a blast in Shanghai, and it was such a contrast to the rural homestay on the other side of the country.

It was a great course. As instructors, we really appreciated the maturity, inquisitiveness, and energy of the Lawrenceville students and teachers. We know they learned a lot, and we did, too.

Thanks for sharing the journey!

After spending two weeks in China, the world seems much larger. There are so many more people in the world than can be fathomed. With so many different forces working before my eyes, it is hard to believe that people can live here. The old China and the modern China clash before my eyes, creating both similar sights and tastes, while also making them ever so slightly off. However, despite all the jarring forces acting on me, the one thing that I am amazed at is my Chinese skills. I have a much better grasp of the language than I imagined, allowing me to use my skill in a way I've never imagined. It is such a different experience, yet my Chinese is just good enough to have meaningful conversations. My Chinese has improved so much!

[post_content] => Today is our last day with our homestay families in Nanyao village. To process this truly special experience, we all participated in a drawing activity in which everyone drew their homestay family and certain objects from their homestay which represented  different aspects of the experience for them. We each shared something that we learned about ourselves; something we learned from the families; something which inspired us and we wanted to carry on in our lives; something we wanted to leave behind; a glowing memory with our families and a question we still have coming out from this experience. Some very inspiring answers were shared. After this, each homestay pairing spent some time making a thank you card for their homestay family, showing our gratitude through creativity.

After a 3.5 hrs flight, we safely landed in Shanghai tonight! Everyone is excited to see what this amazing city has in-stored for us.

After visiting the local elementary school, we returned to our homestay village and went back to our respective homestay families. Maia and I returned to our house to find our homestay dog waiting outside our door. After seeing us, he made a low growling noise and turned into the house, as if reluctantly letting us in. Our homestay kitten was mewing in the corner, and we found our homestay grandmother (Nai-nai!) puttering around inside, constantly working. We helped set the table for dinner and enjoyed rice, beans, noodles, beef and potatoes with the family of four. Nai-nai taught us some Naxi words and their Mandarin translations while we ate. Soon, an aunt came to visit and we watched part of a TV show in Mandarin with the family after dinner. Though Maia and I couldn’t understand much, we appreciated the drama. Our homestay dad turned the TV to an English channel for us after a bit, and we enjoyed watching the beginning of an English movie with Chinese subtitles together before settling into bed for the night.

It’s now the following morning. After a delicious breakfast of  steamed buns, fried eggs, fried bread, homefries, and fermented tofu, we are all waiting at Lili’s house (Lili jia!) to check in for the morning before setting off on a morning hike. Looking forward to a breathtaking view of the valley and the Lashihai wetlands before heading to a local NGO after lunch!

Hey Mom & Dad! I am having so much fun in China! I miss you guys almost as much as I miss toilets. Haha. The food is DELICIOUS and our home-stay mom is super cool and has the cutest baby, Leetsa. This morning I went on a hike to see the gorgeous view of the town we are staying in and the massive lake next to it. There are lots of little dogs here that remind me of Daisy, except they make Daisy seem sweet! Really, some brutal little attack dogs around here! I am having a blast and am looking forward to the last two days of homestay. Now I’m about to head back to have lunch, which our homestay grandmother (she is awesome, too!) will cook for us because our homestay mom works during the day. We also live with our homestay great grandparents, which is crazy. The great grandfather is 98 years old. Okay, love you guys and miss you! Send Hart my love! xoxo

The moment we walked in front of the doorway of the school, young students were crowding around, banging on doors, waiting for us to enter. My first initial impression of the kids was fantastic. Their curiosity, anticipation, and energy truly filled the school’s atmosphere for the entire afternoon. They were kicking around the soccer ball, climbing monkey bars, and playing ping-pong and badminton. Some were even standing along the balconies, looking down with wonder. As we began interacting more and more, most were being extremely outgoing whether they tugged on my shirt, invited us to play, or shouted at us with eagerness. Suddenly, a little tune echoed throughout the schoolyard, signaling to the students that playtime was over.

So, the group split into their coordinated sections, and we headed off to our designated classes. Emma, Adia, and I were placed into the fourth grade class of about eleven. Each student peered outside the windows laughing with excitement as we walked by. Entering the classroom was a bit of a challenge since students congregated around the door. But, once we settled in and began our lesson, everything seemed to proceed very smoothly. The students were interested and engaged in each exercise: first, holding an apple and saying “Hello, my name is…” in English; second, teaching the students how to say red, yellow, and green, during which we became very surprised since they already knew how to pronounce each color; third, using the “newly learned” vocabulary to play red light/green light; fourth, reading some comic books I brought from home (thanks Mom) to them and having them read back to us. After our lesson, the tables actually turned in terms of the roles. The students taught us some phrases and words of their local Nashi language and then escorted everyone back out the schoolyard to participate in the village’s Nashi dance.

After a full day’s worth of interacting, playing, teaching, learning, and dancing, we left the school having created many brief but authentic relationships that will hopefully be revived some day.
