    [post_content] => Hi!

My name is Jack. I am 16 years old and I live in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. I am currently in Grade 11 at Appleby College and I love it here. I have been at Appleby since Grade 7. I am really sporty and will play just about any sport. My favourite sports are soccer and hockey. I am the goalie on my soccer team. I also love history and it is my favourite subject at school. I have been to Bali, Indonesia 3 times and I am looking forward to returning to that part of the world. I really enjoy the simplicity of Bali and I hope that Cambodia brings the same sort of atmosphere. I am really excited about the trip to Cambodia and to learn about the culture of Cambodia. I am looking forward to the prospect of trying new foods in Cambodia.

I look forward to it!

Jack

[post_content] => Sue Sdey Neak tang os Knea (Hello everyone)

My name is Thavry, and I am 27 years old. I have graduated from Czech Republic in 2012 in the major of Information Management. I am very passionate about travelling, writing, art and gender & equality. I love travelling and explore the outside world. Because this is how I learn about the world and myself. That's why you all are going to travel across the globe to Cambodia to learn something that is pretty much very different than your world.

You can learn more about me via my personal website: www.thavry.com, and I also have an exciting news to share with you. I have just released my new book called- A Proper Woman  it talks about how social norms treated women within 3 generations in term of seeking for education, equality and pursue dreams.

I have been working with Dragons since 2015 as an in country instructor, and I have been working with schools trips since 2008 in Siem Reap. I am very excited to work with Claire again as well. :-)

My hope is to be a resourceful for you all while you will be here, I hope to share what I know about Cambodia in term of life, society, foods, culture, history and more. Thank you for choosing Cambodia as your learning destination.

Here, in Cambodia, everyone is looking forward to winter for the whole year. As myself, I am very disappointed with Cambodia winter, because I have been waiting to wear my jacket for the whole year but never happen yet. (Note: our winter is like 18 to 23C)

I look forward to welcoming you to Cambodia soon.

Thavry.

PS: My cat's name is Amok (meaning Silly in Khmer) :-)

My heartfelt chum-reap-sua (hello!) to all.

My name is Claire, I am originally from the UK although I have for many years been living in Asia. I can’t begin to explain how excited I am that I get to spend a few weeks back in Cambodia, with you all, on an amazing learning adventure, and I can’t wait to have the chance to experience the transformative power of this country again through new eyes.

My relationship with Cambodia is a strong and complex one. I lived there for nearly three years, and even though now I live in Nepal where I also love, I get the chance to return to Cambodia several times a year. One of those visits last year was leading the fantastic trip with Appleby college. I enjoyed it so much last time that I had to sign up again!

I used to work with community development organization CRDT in the rural north-east of the country, an area where we will get to spend some time on this trip. It is a beautiful part of the country that will quite literally blow your mind. I was working in a province called Kratie, home to the last remaining Mekong dolphins, working on projects that aim to simultaneously conserve the environment and improve people’s lives. One of the main project areas of that time was the island of Koh Pdao, which is still one of my favourite communities in the world. It is such a special place and it is my great privilege to get to you to stay in this place – you will see what I mean when you get there.

In Cambodia I have also worked with the inspirational Thavry - amazing trip-leader, author, researcher, and general inspiring human being. I can't think of a more perfect person to reveal the intricacies of the Cambodian culture.

For those of you who met me briefly on the skype call last week, you are easily able to hear my English accent and tell where I grew up. When I was living in the UK I spent some time working with young people taking action on global issues in their home communities. My unswerving belief in positive social change, coupled with my faith in the transformative power of education and the inspiration I draw from working with young people, found a perfect synergy when I discovered Dragons over 7 years ago. Every experience I have with Dragons is magical. Every experience changes the world.

One of my main projects outside of Dragons is writing a book about service and volunteering, using a concept called Learning Service. We will for sure get a chance to explore this topic during our time in Cambodia as we get stuck in to a few service projects. I am in fact certain that as we learn more about this complex issue that you will all be able to add perspectives to my book!

Cambodia is a country that leaves a lasting imprint. It is a country that can simultaneously teach you about humanity’s capacity for brutality and resilience, and for despair and hope. It is a country that I feel privileged to have called home and a place to which I still maintain a deep connection. I cannot wait to rediscover and share with you all. As we journey around the wondrous Kingdom, we will invite you to be challenged, to reflect, and to learn with us. What an amazing opportunity to gather such a unique group of people together to have these impactful and powerful discussions and experiences.

I want to thank you for making the choice to come on this program; you have already won my deepest admiration for that. This trip will challenge you to step outside your comfort zone in a way that nothing ever has, and if you embrace it, you are likely to have the most profound learning encounters of your life. Be open and trust in the journey.

I can’t wait to meet you in a few short weeks, to discuss our hopes and goals and views of the world over a long cool café-teuk-doh-koh-teuk-kok (the longest word in the world to mean – an iced coffee!)

Please feel free to use this Field Notes board as your own. Post introductions, questions, and thoughts as you prepare for the trip ahead, and we instructors will do our best to get back to you.

Chum-reap-leah (goodbye!) for now!

Claire

Intrepid friends of Appleby,

It’s a pleasure to warmly welcome you to your Appleby and Where There Be Dragons Yak Board for “Cambodia: A New Generation.”

Believe it or not, March is just around the corner! Soon, you all will be making your way from Oakville to Phnom Penh, trading the Lake Ontario for the Mekong River. And maybe more than landscape, you’ll be immersing yourself in several rhythms of life as you weave your way through peaceful sunsets of Koh Pdao up to the world’s largest religious monument of Angkor Wat over the course of two incredible weeks.

This board will be an invaluable forum from beginning to end to help you weave a rich narrative of the collective journey you’re about to embark on. From introductions and goals before the course begins, to reflecting on your experiences in the field, to ultimately start thinking about how to integrate your time in Cambodia back into Ontario. So, in some ways, introducing yourself on this board marks your official beginning!

You’ll find that the Appleby-Dragons community will be here to support you through all of the exciting journey ahead, from rugged travel, home-stays, laughter with new friends, group discussions, and conversations with people who may change your worldview as you know it. This community will be your foundation as you walk, eat, see, and connect to Cambodia in new, exciting ways.

We’re excited to share in all you do and learn. The first step is an introduction! While many of you know one another, we would love to hear about some of your goals, excitement, fears, curiosity you have as the course approaches. We invite you to introduce and share a bit of yourself. You’ll be amazed looking back at course end the ways you’ve grown and changed in just a short time.

We are thrilled to follow along with your adventure.

With joy,

The Dragons Administration Team
