    [post_content] => I woke up this morning to the sound of rain, thousands of drops bouncing off the metal roof, sound like tiny needles falling on the ground. After a very wet bike ride to the community centre, we shared stories of our night. Following our Khmer lesson, we enjoyed another wonderful traditional breakfast. Due to the weather issue, we could not work in the garden until later. We all took advantage of a well needed lazy morning, hanging around in the hammock. We had a very touching and enlightening interview about gender roles in society. Many card games later, we got to work, we finished the fencing and started on the irrigation system. We took a lot of breaks to play with the kids and share cans of Sling Shots. After work we biked to school to test our soccer and volleyball skills. Two crushing blows for Team Cambodia left us hanging our heads on the bike ride back to dinner. We had some live entertainment as we ate, watching a frog feeding frenzy. As we ate our delicious dinner, we shared stories the day and laughed a lot. After the meal we grappled with our lights and started our trek home. I fell in to my homestay and got right in bed. Another amazing day.

We started to build the garden after breakfast. First step was to put up the fence. Dig a hole that is about half a meter deep, then put a big piece of wood into it.

Then, we have to dig up the mud and dirt to make it soft and ready to plant vegetables. There was lots of garbage in the dirt, so we had to pick it out. Plastic bags, broken shoes, clothes. So many things which should not be found in the ground.

We worked for 2 hours, before lunch, then we went back to our homestay, took a shower, rested for a while. After that we have a conversation with an old man who had been through the Khmer Rouge. It is really different to learning the history from a book and learning from a human being who has actually been through the history. He talked about his life stories and his point of view of the government and war. The most amazing part is that he is not angry about the past. He does not hate people who used to be bad to him. He said that people should not be angry about what had happened in the past. I like his positive attitude to life.

We were going to meet a young couple from the island next. Before they arrived, the boys started to play cricket. They hit the ball over people's head, and it flew right into the kitchen through the window. Luckily, no one got hurt.

Later, we talked to a young couple, they have a 4 months old baby girl. They are only 20 and 23 years old and are already parents. We learned about their life, how they quit school and started working at a young age. They hoped to get higher education but they can't. Now, they are putting their hope into their daughter. They wish she can get higher education and find a better job. [post_content] => My day began with the usual 6:30AM wake up time and followed by a 1KM bike ride to breakfast. I find myself using this time to reflect and anticipate the upcoming day - as well as feel baked under the hot sun. Breakfast was a more traditional western meal, in which included bread and omelets. Following our meal, we headed to the service placement. We picked up where we left off. Some of us finished off hoeing the field, others hammed in the posts, and another group wired in the fencing. Whatever job you had, it ultimately resulted in indefinite exhaustion due to the sun, nevertheless it was rewarding either way. The group split up and went to our individual homestays where we washed up and I personally had an engaging conversation with my homestay family. I believe that it is important to get perspective on different lifestyle to compare and contrast, which is exactly what we have been doing. My homestay group made our way back to the community center and had a delectable traditional lunch filled with my personal favourite food - Fried mushroom! We relaxed on the hammocks for a few hours, bonding and reminiscing. After this, we had the chance to interview two island teenagers. This experience was eye-opening. It made the entire group thankful that we are able to stay in school and focus on our education. I will never again take my privileges for granted, as I realized that most of my struggle are temporary while theirs are permanent. We had dinner after the interview, my favorite part was the vegan curry. As usual, we biked back to the homestay, and at that point I realized we are half-way done the trip.

    [post_content] => Getting around the island is incredible. We bike around on a long road where all of our homestay families, school, community center and the garden we are building are..It is so nice to feel the breeze especially in this very hot and humid weather. We bike with bright smiling faces, as everyone in the island waves welcoming “Suesdey” we yell out. The Cambodian sunset is beautiful. Our first day in the Koh Pdao island has been successful. We went to meet our homestay families. We settled in and thanked them for welcoming us into their beautiful home. A few hours later the group visited the spirit house “Neaktar's home” There we asked permission to be on the island for few days and Neaktar gave us his blessing. We are so glad to finally be here and we are looking forward to the next few days.

As the light of the beaming Cambodian sun entered our rooms, a new amazing and adventurous day was ahead of the group. Although it was our last day in the hectic city of Phnom Penh (which also marks the end of tuktuk rides), we were excited to embark to the beautiful town of Kratie, which would eventually lead us to our homestay families in the island of Koh Pdao. As always, we began with a hearty breakfast to prepare us for the day, then we went on the 6 hour drive to Kratie. Although a long day of travel with no technology was a foreign concept to most of us, this experience really brought the group together. We laughed, we played, and most importantly, we slept. Once we had enjoyed lunch (spoiler alert: it was rice and many types of curry) we finally arrived in the marvelous city of Kratie. We settled down in the Le Tonle hotel. Although this is only a pitstop for just one night, it is needless to say that the view of the river is unlike any other – calm waters, a slight breeze through the trees in the distance, and the birds singing in harmony. The view was exceptionally beautiful during the sunset, where a beautiful pink-blue coated the sky and water. It was truly a blissful place. Tomorrow we look forward to taking a boat to Koh Pdao and experiencing the long-anticipated homestays. More journeys lie ahead for the Dragons!

    [post_content] => Today we started off by going to this delicious vegetarian restaurant with fake meat. It was my favorite meal so far. We then took a 45-minute tuktuk ride out to the Killing Fields. The ride was super fun, as always. The Killing Fields were extremely sad. The stories that were told were unbelievable. It is crazy how Cambodians treated their own people at that time. We then went to lunch at a Thai place and found that one of the dishes had ants in it! But it tasted quite good.

After a break where we chilled and relaxed, we went to the market. It was overwhelming but extremely cool. So hot, and a lot of people! It was a great experience though. We then went to Olympic park and we watched a soccer game for a bit and we danced/zumba-ed! It was so fun, we did it along with local people, and danced to both North American and local music. I'm a really bad dancer, but it was still fun.

We went for dinner and then tuktuked back. But I didn't mind as I love being in the tuktuk. When we got back to the hotel the group met on the roof. As we walked in we saw candles and it smelt so good! We did the three stones ceremony - something to leave behind, something to put in to the group, and something to take with yo u. Today was overall really fun, and although I'm excited to get to the next city, I'll be sad to leave Phnom Penh.

    [post_content] => We went to the Khmer Rouge memorial today and we were devastated. The stories we heard, I almost found myself in tears because of what I heard and saw. The guilt is surreal, knowing that this happened and not having any pre-knowledge was difficult. At the same time, I am so glad we learned about this today.

We also went to a cooking class which was so fun. Khai, our cooking instructor was amazing. Something I am noticing about Cambodian people is that they share hospitality that is embodied within them.

    [post_content] => A few photos of our group learning about Buddhism and how to meditate... and COOK! We made mango salad amok and banana coconut dishes. Everything was made from scratch and the group was laughing the entire time. Very fun, and a nice way to bring joy and happiness to a day that was also laden with the heaviness of the history of the Khmer Rouge and Cambodia's difficult recent history.

Just a quick update on the Appleby crew!

Here is the picture we took together at Phnom Penh international airport. They have landed safely.

    [post_content] => Hello everyone!

My name is Shadi, and I was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. I am currently 17 years old, which means I'm in grade 11 at Appleby. I love to listen to music, and watch Netflix (currently loving the show House) amongst many other things of course. I'm a boarding student at school, and I would have to say my favorite subject is either biology or chemistry. I am Canadian, but my background is Iranian, and I speak three languages (English, Persian, French)! I travel to Asia very often, but I've never really seen outside the general area of the middle east, so I'm excited to experience southeast Asia! Although they're in the same continent, the two areas are drastically different and I am super excited to learn more about the parts of Asia I have yet to experience. I absolutely love to travel, and I'm excited to embark on this amazing journey to Cambodia!

I can't wait to arrive!

Shadi :)
