[post_content] => In economics, scarcity is vital to the soul of the subject. Scarcity leaves consumers hungry for more, creating the demand that keeps the market alive.

That is precisely what this trip has done. Three months are but an inhale and exhale in the course of our lives, and being able to spend it in a new country with new people whilst experiencing new emotions is a rare and fleeting opportunity. Now that we are realizing that the trip is drawing to a close, we are experiencing this scarcity -- the scarcity of being able to be so detached from our lives that we learn to see with new vision, think with a new perspective, and feel with an open, unafraid heart.

But what this scarcity has done is create demand. A demand for what, exactly? I am not yet entirely sure, but I have an idea.

We will head home and crave the space where we can apply what we have learned about our lives, our world, and our purpose. We will seek challenges that force us to gain more like skills. We'll stay hungry for adventure, self-inquiry, and a knowledge unavailable in the classroom or from anyone other than ourselves because we know more than we can ever dream of; it is just a matter of finding the means to attain it.

We will search for discomfort and lean into the unfamiliar with curious eyes. We'll carry a new sense of confidence and self that we ache to use. We'll start planning our own mini expeditions in life -- whether they entail another trip halfway across the world or simply hiking through the backyard. We'll jump onto problems with optimism for solutions and hunt for the positive. We'll find places to share ourselves and learn from others openly.

We will seek the true feeling of being alive -- not just living -- and hold ourselves to live our lives to such standards. In a sense, we will so adamantly keep this experience breathing that we will live like we never stopped traveling.

Because, after all, I think that we don't just travel to learn about a new reality; I think we travel to understand our own.

------

Thank you, Indonesia.

Dear Parents,

We want to thank you for letting us share 3 months with your children. They are reflections of all the love you’ve given them, all the struggles you’ve shared, and all the history that runs through your own roots. Indonesia, the student group, and us (the instructors) are now gratefully part of the sunshine and rain that will be at least one branch in their upward growth. As we have tried our best to mentor and challenge your children, they in turn have mentored and challenged us with their curiosity, questions, and fresh eyes into Indonesia.

In just a few hours, the group will be boarding their international flights on to their next destinations. When you are finally reunited we ask that you treat them with patience and compassion. Much of what we have experienced is incredibly difficult to articulate to each other, let alone to one who has not been along for the whole ride. The stories will eventually come, the meaning will ripen in subtle and obvious way, but all that may take time. For now, know that sharing and silence are both OK. What is most important is to be present and patient in the coming days and weeks.

We hope your reunions are joyful. Thank you for entrusting us with your children for the past 3 months.

[post_content] => I'm still digesting everything that has happened over the past three months, so I would like to just thank some of the people I met in Indonesia that made this program meaningful.

First, I must thank Papi, my home stay mother in Jogja. She fed me incredible food, taught me bahasa Indonesia, made me laugh all the time, and basically showed me the ropes. She also made me realize how similar the words "sit" and "shit" are. Dangerously similar.

Andreas, my ISP instructor, taught me how to make street art and showed me all the beautiful artwork all around Jogja. He also taught me that making mistakes is fine, that you should just go for it anyway.

In Langa, I must thank my host mom and my host sister. They fed me all the vegetables I could possibly want and I wanted a lot. I must also thank them for getting me hooked on Anak Jalanan, an Indonesian show that translates to "Children of the Street". Don't worry, they aren't really children and they definitely didn't grow up on the street. However, the most important thing I learned from my Langa family was how to sit in silence. How to embrace moments where you are doing absolutely nothing. It's a skill I didn't know I didn't have and one that proved essential later on in Sampela.

And finally, Sampela. My host family in Sampela was incredible. The first night, I was sure they didn't like me. I was so used to the overwhelming friendliness of the people in Langa that their more quiet nature made me uneasy. Through trips to the Kaledupa market with my mom, sitting on the porch with my dad, and hanging out with my host sister and her baby, I began to feel like part of the family. I discovered that they were kind and hilarious people, even though I couldn't communicate with my host mom and dad very well. Sometimes you can tell a lot about a person just from sitting with them on their porch. I think that's what blows me away most about this course: how you can know a person without having been able to communicate well with them. How just experiencing someone's life with them for a short period of time can teach you so much about them.

I know that my experience in Indonesia could not have been the same without these people and I want to thank them for inviting me into their lives. I only hope they got something out of the experience too.

I woke up this morning and said thank you. To the bamboo floors, to the steel corrugated ceilings, to the stilts keeping this house up; to whomever was listening...

For the salty air, the sounds of children playing in the ocean, the smell of smoke coming from different kitchens, the geckos suctioned to wooden beams, for the smile that my mother greets me with in the morning that I want to wrap around me like a sarong to take home.

For the sea meaning freedom, the rats who come out at night, the porches that replace family rooms, for the clouds that roll away from the sky when I’m not looking, the breeze that sways when the moon is revealed like a pearl, the goosebumps I get when the plankton becomes the stars of the ocean, and for this place that is bound to the earth not by land but by water, a place where I am allowed to simply be.
