Sebaidee!

Checking in after a year and a half--over Skype! Jordan, Sarah B., Sarah E, James, Marguerite, Jesse, and I enjoyed catching up (most of us hadn't talked since last May). We will be organizing our second annual holiday gift exchange soon, and have already begun planning our reunion hopefully early next summer (potentially in Santa Barbara to watch Jordan graduate this coming June whoop whoop!!). People are all doing well, and already thinking about study abroad again...Jordan is currently in Macedonia!

Missed our Skype? No worries! We will be video chatting again on the day of our 2 year anniversary: February 8th. Join us then!

Love,

Jordan, Sarah B, James, and Elise

Cambrodians, Laost Boys, and Yunanicorns

It's hard to say goodbye to someone who doesn't know I exist, someone who has made such an impact on my life yet doesn't care one way or another whether I was there. Someone who has pushed me along my journey, led the way through uncertainty, made me smile when I was sad, introduced me to some of the people I love most and carried me home so many times. What do I say to that person when it's my last chance to be with her, if not forever then at the very least for a long while? How do I express my gratitude when she rushes by me, going about her daily routine, being the force of nature that I know her as? How can I get her to understand all that she has done for me and all that she means to me? I had my last conversation with Mother Mekong yesterday afternoon. Standing knee deep in her frigid, rushing waters, I was lost. She was my guiding force for so long, paving the way for me in these overwhelming, emotianally exhausting lands. She helped me keep my feet on the ground, in her waters. I didn't know how to part ways with her. I couldn't simply turn my back on her after all she had done for me. I had to take her with me, one way or another. I needed a reminder of the lessons that she and the people along her banks taught me these last few months. I wanted to keep her churning waters within me, in my heart and mind, even when we are a world apart. I pulled my hair out of its ponytail and plunged my head into the current. What better way to encapsulate the lessons she taught me than by bathing my mind in her one more time? "'If there is magic in this world, it is in water,'" Marguerite said to us on the banks as the group spent a few last minutes remembering our mother river together. In that one moment, my head engulfed in the frigidity, I soaked up the magic. I sent every thought I had to the river, thanking her and letting her know I would never forget every moment I shared with her. How grateful I am for her, and how I will forever fight to protect her. To protect my river. But she is not my river. She protected me throughout my journey, looked after me as a mother does, pushed me through challenges like only a mother can. She carried me through as no one else could. I am hers, and forever will be. "To stick your hands into the river is to feel the cords that bind the earth together in one piece." -Barry Lopez [post_title] => Water, Magic [post_excerpt] => [post_status] => publish [comment_status] => closed [ping_status] => open [post_password] => [post_name] => water-magic [to_ping] => [pinged] => [post_modified] => 2016-02-08 16:17:14 [post_modified_gmt] => 2016-02-08 23:17:14 [post_content_filtered] => [post_parent] => 0 [guid] => http://wp.wheretherebedragons.com/?p=82326 [menu_order] => 0 [post_type] => post [post_mime_type] => [comment_count] => 0 [filter] => raw [categories] => Array ( [0] => WP_Term Object ( [term_id] => 36 [name] => Best Notes From The Field [slug] => best-notes-from-the-field [term_group] => 0 [term_taxonomy_id] => 36 [taxonomy] => category [description] => These pieces of travel writing are reflections by students and instructors traveling all over the world. Well Friends,

It's hard for me to believe that we've known each other already for 93 days straight and that we're already saying goodbye. This has been a wonderful and incredible experience for me, and I've learned so much from every person that I've met. You've made me laugh. You've made me cry. You've made me question my perspectives, and you've changed some of them. And I'm going to miss each one of you dearly. And even though tomorrow we're leaving China and leaving each other, I know that each of you are going to be with me in my heart for the rest of my life. Though I sincerely do hope we meet again soon. And I am expecting skype dates and late night phone calls from each and every one of you, so talk to you then!

All my love,

Elise

SU 5-12    8:27 am
-It is so difficutl to understand the numbers on my watch as I sit here in my sleeping bag at the program house. Yes, last night we had beautiful final ceremonies, we've been packing up our bags, and getting plans ready to go to the airport, but still. How can it be the 12th of May already? Sure we've been to amazing places throughout Cambodia, Laos, and Yunnan, but how did it get so late so soon?
Denial aside, this has been one of the most amazing times of my life. I will miss each member of our group, our Mekong Family. These wonderful individuals have supported me, laughed with me, and taken care of me during our adventure. Having them there made each day an exciting one, and I always knew I would be accepted and supported, no matter what the situation.
So thank you to the wonderful students and instructors who made this trip so amazing. I will miss each one of you so much and really have loved getting to know you! Please stay in touch and know that my door is always open. You've all meant so much to me throughout this trip. Thank you.

Our epic journey has come to a end. We said our farewells, exchanged hugs, and many of us shed tears. So many memories will no doubt stay with us for a lifetime - the friendships we have forged, the support network we have established, and all the beautiful people & places that have touched us.

Thank you to all the parents for entrusting us with your beloved child, we have come to love them as our own. They have worked very hard to become independent travelers, capable of learning from the world around them. We hope you will find ample of time to listen to all their amazing adventures that they have to share.

Thank you to our Mekong family: Sarah E, Sarah B, Jane, Louisa, Marguerite, Elise, Will, Henry, James, Neel, Jordan, Mara, and Somsanid - We love you!

Ah... So much love!

Your Mekong Sages: Jacky, Jesse, Hillary

Going Home!

Mekong Sages,Life Along the Mekong Semester, Spring 2013

Description

Our epic journey has come to a end. We said our farewells, exchanged hugs, and many of us shed tears. So many memories will no doubt stay with us for a lifetime – the friendships we have forged, the support network we have established, and all the beautiful people & places that have touched us. […]

Art is unconventional, art is language. Art is sacred, art is old. Art is nothing, art is practicality. Art is life, art is everything. Art is light, art is new. Art is laughter, art is love.

Art is in the way Sapen's mother tied her headscarf in Cambodia. Art is the splashing of water and smearing of colour in Laos. Art is the many shades of mountain layers in China.

Life is the art you put into the world

After many naps and books later, we have just arrived in Kunming! We left beautiful Shaxi this morning and have arrived in the big city containing 6, 000 000 people and the capital of the Yunnan province. We have just gobbled up a delicious dinner on the lake and are finishing up ISP presentations tomorrow. We've been spending our time pouring eachother tea and enjoying our last moments together as an adorable little family. We will be spending time planning our final ceremony and continuing to be generally good looking. Everyone is excited to see loved ones at home but also sad to be saying goodbye. I know the instructors are going to miss our sassy comments and fabulous constant stream of questions. Lots of love and reflection circulating around the Mekong crew!

Much love!

Team Mekong

Thank you, Jacky.  One of many things I'm taking home with me because of you.
