[post_content] => Tomorrow night we are embarking on a four day journey to Tiger Leaping Gorge. Tiger Leaping Gorge is a canyon on the Yangtze River and part of Yunnan's UNESCO World Heritage sight, the Three Parallel Rivers. We will take a sleeper train to LaShiHai, where we will spend the night next to a lake and enjoy Yunnan's natural beauty. Then, on Monday we will spend the day trekking through the gorge to a guesthouse, where we will stay the night. The following day, we will hike down and countinue our journey in LiJiang. Wednesday morning we will return to Kunming, and return to our regular routines, Chinese classes, and internships.

Nga sira, Nuzo Muto, says Ban Gamseng it’s your turn. So here I am in front of a few hundred people about to give a speech in Zaiwa, which I have only been speaking for a few weeks. The sugar cane fields and mountainous jungles are only slightly different from the snowy and cold suburbia where I have just graduated high school. My friends are standing behind me on the stage and my teachers are off to the right. I can see the faces of almost everyone in the crowd, and the cameraman standing right in front of me doesn’t help my nervousness. I overstress and stumble through every syllable. Although I think I might have said Ngo correctly. The crowd, filled mostly with Zaiwa people, applaud and cheer out of good manners or because I’m a foreigner (American.) Walking offstage, I am a little disappointed, and I still don’t know how I ended up here. But I am happy that I am (here).

I ended up here because a few months ago I was traveling with some friends, Nuzo among them. We started discussing minorities Nuzo brought up the point that some minorities get more attention people for one reason or another. She felt that her minority, Zaiwa was overlooked. I figured then that I could not overlook it. I should do better than that. I am now learning the language, and culture. And now I am working on a Zaiwa dictionary because of all of this.

Nga sira, Nuzo Muto, says Ban Gamseng it’s your turn. So here I am in front of a few hundred people about to give a speech in Zaiwa, which I have only been speaking for a few weeks. The sugar cane fields and mountainous jungles are only slightly different from the snowy and cold suburbia […]

Hello all!

We just want to check in and inform everyone that we are safe and sound and that the 5.0 earthquake that hit near Dali did not effect us. We wish the best to the people affected by the recent earthquakes and hope for the best outcomes.

Cheers,

The China Interns

[post_content] => According to someone somewhere, people fall into two categories: type A and type B. While type A personalities enjoy methodically planning each minute detail of the day, preventing any spontaneous sorts of fun, type B personalities like to allow for as much fun as possible, by simply going with the flow. I like to think that I am a mixture of these two types, but last week, when teaching English to a group of 10 year olds in a rural village, I took on type B. I couldn't understand why I, who speaks English fluently and is the endlessly fascinating "token foreigner" would have to plan to fill four hours with these kids. Now, in retropect, I am eternally grateful that Jeff forced me into creating a lesson plan, a lifeboat that I could not have survived without during those four hours. Jeff and I introduced these children, many of them marginalized and underpriviledged, to the joy of learning English and the possibilities of communicating in another language. Although in reality, I know that these kids will probably not remember the difference between "grey" and “green” (a challenge for many of the students), I can only hope that these kids have experienced the inexbicable sensation of happiness that comes from something so pure as learning. After emerging from this experience, I have a newfound respect for my teachers, one that I wish I could have carried with me throughout high school, and one that I will never again neglect.
