It has been one year since my stay in China, and not one single day goes by without me thinking of my experiences there. I went into the trip thinking I knew what to expect, I honestly thought it was going to bebaby-sittingfor rich kids, and I was okay with that. I had a synical view of the people that said they were going to "find themselves", I didn't understand that, and I thought I had pretty good idea what i was all about. I was excited for the trip but I had no idea how deeply I would be impacted. It has taken me this long to write a reflection yak yak because I needed the time to gather my thoughts. I made such greatfriendson the trip with whom I am still in constant contact with. When I talk to them, we look back on our dragons experience and often say that it was the best time of our lives. Sometimes it is hard looking back, but Irealizethat Dragons helped develop me into a more thoughtful and mature person. I carry the lessons and relationships that I developed in China with me everyday. I have such vivid memories that evoke every emotion, there were as many difficult times as there were good but as I look back I wouldn't change anything.

I want to thank Dragon's from the bottom of my heart.

Todd

Dear Everyone,

Our three months of China exploration are behind us. We cant believe it has really been three months.

It is always interesting to reflect back, just as we did today for breakfast, at the time when we firtst met each other and think of how we are going to spent three months 24/7 with this group od people who are all so different.

There have been times od laugh, times of tears, times of hugs and times when we wanted to be alone. It has been cold, it has been hot as hell, it has been exhausting and relaxing. There was a bit of everything, and we have shared it all.

Most probably there were some best experiences of our lives in those three months, and we will all remember them warmly, triing to get people around us to understand how we feel about it.

It is always hard to talk about our experiences to those who havent been there and who have no clue how it is to squat on the chinese toilet or walk down the food market chewing a scorpion on the stick.

We had joy we had fun...and we will try to share it with you to our best.

For now we have made an online photo album, so we can all share some of the greatest memories from the past 13 weeks.

the Picasa Album is on chinaspring08@gmail.com

the password is dragons2008

We all hope that the lessons we have learned will make our world a better place and that they will radiate from us and shine on all the others.

Have a nice day, every day

from the Kingdom of the Dragon,

Ziva

[post_content] => I m just writing to tell everyone that our students have done a impressive job on painting nice looking paintings on the walls of the kindergarten.

In this artistic project for the kids our students and instructors spent 4 days to finish all the painting, Kathy , one of the six students in our group who is gifted in painting was playing the main role as an painter and was in charge of the whole project.

WithKathy’s instruction we not only painted nice animal pictures on the walls but also have painted each animal’s name both in Chinese and English. So in this way the kids can learn how to say these animal’s names in Chinese and English,( hopefully they can learn how to say in English)

So everyone, check out our work! ( here I only can post three pictures of the painting we made, actually we would love to show more of them to you!)

For the past month and a half I have been studying the practice of tattooing within the Chinese minorities. It has been very interesting to see the vast contrasts between the western concept of tattoos and the traditional style here. My main focus was on the Dulong minority from the Dulong River Valley here in Yunnan. They are known for the tattooed faces of the women within the minority. Although this practice has ended many years ago, 60 women are still living with these customary markings today. Most of the women received the tattoos around the age of twelve when they were married as a sign of adulthood. There are three reasons researchers say the tattoos are applied, but pinning it down has been difficult due to the different responses from the Dulong people. First, they say it is to disfigure the women so that rivaling tribes would not take them as slaves. Some say that the markings are a way of recognition from neighboring tribes. The last reason is contrary to the first in that they may have seen it as a sign of beauty. Looking at the designs I would say it was an attempt to look pretty, usually they depicted flowers and other objects that are often synonymous with beauty.

I have plenty more facts but I promised myself I would not bore anyone, and I feel like I’m on the verge so I will stop there.

I’ll see everyone in ten days

Whoever said manual labor is therapeutic clearly hasn’t worked with concrete. The only therapy shoveling, mixing, carrying, and pouring cement provides is the whining at the end of the day. Cement for the unenlightened is powdered rock mixed with a noxious cocktail of chemicals which, when mixed with water, transforms into liquid stone. The process—sans cement mixer—involves piling up sand in a mound out in the street, carrying over a 150 pound bag of concrete, pouring it into the sand, sifting the concrete into the sand, pouring four-to-five buckets of water into a ‘crater’ in the center of the pile, mixing the sand, cement, and water together with your shovel (a physically excruciating process), pouring the resulting sludge into buckets, carrying the cement two buckets at a time—each about 20 pounds—up two flights of stairs, and finally negotiating your way past the low-hanging branches and finding the person who sent down the empty buckets in the first place (giving them a significant look and/or an eye roll is optional). Such has been my and several of my peers’ life for the past four days, and the only good that I can honestly say comes from my work is that the exhaustion I feel at the end of our six hour work day allows me to fall asleep on my otherwise uncomfortable bed.

My path to finding my ISP was a rocky one. I had originally started out wanting to learn tae kwon doe but after two weeks, I had decided that it was not really what I wanted to take back from China. By chance, I mentioned to Chay that for a long time I had been interested in learning the game of Go a game played in Japan. To my surprise, Chay told me that the game was in fact created in China and was known as Wei Qi here. From then on Chinese lessons with Chay involved rousing games with victories on both sides. I played whomever I could to gain experience, even finding a Wei Qi parlor and playing the old pros there. The true purpose of my ISP however, was to teach the rest of the group. This was easier said than done. Everyone was eager to learn but the game came to some naturally while others struggled with every move. The presentation of my ISP in which everyone played one game, was the culmination of everything I had learned and taught to the others. I lost my game to my archrival Chay, while Aleth’s and Todd’s game kept us on the edge of our seats with no clear winner in site until the very end. I do not expect this to be the end of my experience with Wei Qi and I hope for the others it is not as well.
