Minglabar from Yangon, our final destination in Myanmar. For the past few days we've begun the transference aspect of our course. This exercise allows the students to reflect on and discuss how to bring our respective experiences home with us. Activities include discussions on Eastern values we hope to incorporate into our lives at home, comtemplating each destination on course and how it has affected us, and brainstorming ways to articulate said impact to our friends and family at home. All exercises are student led and time permitting, each student will design and facilitate an activity. Thank you to everyone who supported us in coming to this incredible country, namely our parents. We can't wait to see you all and tell you about our adventures!

X-Phase Itinerary!

Jessie,FALL: Southeast Asia

Description

X-Phase: Pathein, Chaung Tha, Yangon. As part of the Dragons program we will partake in X-phase — a week where Dragons students plan everything from choosing the location and booking hotels to organizing bus rides and finding activities all within an allotted budget. Through much discussion and many long lunch meals, we have decided to […]

    [post_content] => I spoke to the team last night and all is well in Myanmar!

"Hi all,
Our group trekked out from Sinle Village yesterday morning under a perfect blue sky. The group decided to take the opportunity to practice silent solo walking meditation the whole morning. After a connecting van ride and lunch, we took longtail boats across Innlay Lake to the town of Ngya Shwe where we will be until xphase begins the night of the 24th. We will be taking the night bus to Yangon that night.

Good health and high spirits abound. The group loved the homestay in Sinle and did a great job connecting with their families and helping harvest rice and plant garlic. The general sentiment was that we would have liked to stay longer, as is the case most places we have been.
Students have been reminded yet again about field notes, so expect notes and pics in the coming days."

    [post_content] => Hello Families and friends,

I hope this note finds you all well.  I wanted to write an update as some of you may have read the news about conflict on the China-Myanmar border in the northern region.  Please know the group is safe and no where near this area.

This conflict, like many others in Myanmar (and other parts of the world for that matter), has a very long history. Myanmar is a country that has over 60 various ethnic groups and the border was drawn quite arbitrarily by the British when they colonized the region. Conflicts are common, especially in zones where military (both Chinese and Myanmar) clash with ethnic populations often over immigration, land and resources rights.

Again, the group is safe and no where near this, nor are we heading anywhere near this area.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Dragons office.

Kind regards,

-Hillary

    [post_content] => Greetings!

I received an update from the Myanmar crew!

"The journey back from Chin was much easier than the journey up, partly thanks to clear weather and much drier roads. The group is in good health and has been able to rest well in Mandalay. Emotionally some of the dust from the election has settled too. The students led the Chin debrief yesterday and did a great job. It was nice to hear how much they took from the experience and that the learning objectives were met. Students are busily and excitedly planning the expedition phase of travel and catching up with Mandalay friends!
We are ready for Shan State and have a night bus booked for 8:30pm tonight. We will stay 1 day in Kalaw before trekking with Ko Hari to Sinle village. It's going to be a beautiful time in the mountains and they are excited to learn more about Danu people of the region."
