    [post_content] => Hello all!!

Sadly, it is our last full night in India. At this time tomorrow, we will be at the airport on our way back to you! We began our day with a delicious breakfast in Agra. Afterwards, we packed our bags and started our 3 hour road trip back to Delhi. We stopped on the way for yummy chai and snacks. Once we reached our destination, we enjoyed a delicious South Indian lunch. Soon after, we headed across the street and bought goodies from both Indian and Tibetan vendors. An hour later, we hopped back into the car and drove to a family owned tea shop, in which we all stocked up on delicious teas (which we will be sharing with you:)). We ended the night with a dinner at the guesthouse and an early curfew.

As our final day approaches, we are reflecting back on our wonderful time in this beautiful and colourful country. Although we are sad to leave, we are excited to return and share our experiences with everyone. This was truly the trip of a lifetime and we cannot believe how fast it went by! We are thankful we had the opportunity to come to India and we hope to visit again in the near future!

Hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving!

Best wishes,

The Williams' :) (MaeLea and Mac)

[post_content] => Yesterday we arrived in Agra and had the incredible opportunity to see the Taj Mahal. It was so strange to see something so beautiful right in front of me. At first it didn't seem real - the palace that I've seen in so many photos and videos was so much bigger than I expected. I wasn't able (and still not able) to comprehend the beauty of the Taj Mahal. I then walked around the palace and noticed the detail and time put into every design and carving. It made me realize that although at home, it may seem like there are so many things preventing me from doing what I love, I just need to take chances and follow my gut. By doiing so, I can hopefully accomplish my biggest goals. The Taj Mahal inspired me greatly and will continue to do so even when I'm not standing right in front of it. This morning we saw the palace during sunrise. There was a thick layer of fog covering mostly everything, and the Taj Mahal seemed so magical. I have never seen such beautiful colors reflect on such a beautiful structure. Watching the Taj Mahal during sunrise motivated me to spread inspiration and encouragement to everyone I can, espeically other women around me.

With whispers that are familiar and a language that isn't

This does not matter.

Shantaram is on my lap and the train's heartbeat sings within me.

We lean our heads against the glass separating us from India's countrysides and lay hopelessly and happily in our sleepy spontaneity.

My hands are clean
And

Chai cups lay empty between us
Joking
With our bags that are much too big

Time is passing too quickly.

Time is passing too quickly.

Time is passing

Time turns into wind and ruffles the hair of a young boy running to join the card game in the dirt

And now I am distracted

Time

But the sun is whispering again and somewhere Hindi pop music is playing

And the world outside my window is impossibly real.

Our day began at the bright hour of 3am. We climbed out of bed and said our last goodbyes to Vatsalya, and then took a bus to the train station. We arrived before the train, so we gathered and waited for it to arrive in the urine scented station. At 6am the train pulled up to the station and like sardines we crammed into our designated cars for the next 5 hours. We settled into our bunk-bed like seats and tightly clutched our belongings as we tried to catch up on sleep. When we weren’t sleeping we could see the countryside through the windows. When we needed to use the restroom we used the squat toilet in which the hole went straight onto the ether and onto tracks. Every few minutes a man came by selling chai and other snacks. In one of the cars some of us bought Indian Masala flavored Lays which were delicious! Once we approached the Agra station, we pushed to the open door of the train where we quickly disembarked trying to avoid the stares we’re now used to, as a large group of foreigners can be a surprising site. We walked out of the station to smell the familiar scent of burning trash, and on the way to our bus we saw cows and puppies in the parking lot. Although it was a very overwhelming experience to leave the comfort of Vatsalya, it was a great opportunity to experience the infamous Indian Railways.

[post_content] => We asked Archer women about to reflect on lessons, learning, and cherished takeaways from their time at Vatsalya. Please enjoy just a peek into our memorable 7 days:

I didn't know how inclusivity made a difference until I came here and experienced it first hand. The happiness and the never ending joy that the kids showed filled everyday with the possibility of new experiences and more importantly, new friendships (despite the language barrier). Playing and singing with everyone here made me realize that the materialistic things in life don't matter at all. Happiness is the most important feeling, and I will make sure to focus on the things that really matter and that make me happy when I return home. (Stella)

The thing I was most impressed by while at Vatsalya was how unbelievably kind every single child was here. They were always willing to have us play games with them (no matter how bad we were at the games), and always were so helpful when we got confused. Somethings are easy to teach but kindness certainly isn't and every child here has it in excess. I believe this kindness and willingness to help others will be one of all these kids greatest attributes in life. (Sophia F)

At Vatsalya, I was able to live in an environment where everyone was accepting of the other, and human relationships were very strong and valued. I think at Vatsalya I have been able to grow as an individual, no matter how short my time here was. I felt so welcomed by all of the students- many tried to create a connection between us and I really value that trait. Even through the language barrier there was rarely an issue- I have learned so much at Vatsalya and I will cherish my time here forever. (Rose)

I learned that connection and understanding can change everything, that friendship and laughter and love brings new meaning to service and to our own lives. I learned that, without this "Vatsalya", this unconditional love, we are alone, and that we are much stronger together than we alone. (Gemma)

My experience here at Vatsalya was life-changing. Despite the little time we had here, the love, compassion, and hope that builds the Vatsalya community shines through every child. They have taught us to cherish happiness and to open arms to others with laughter and love. I can comfort my sorrows of leaving Vatsalysa, knowing the genuine connections and friendships we made cannot be broken, even when we're miles apart. (Caitlin)

At Vatsalya I learned the importance of community. Every day I am amazed and inspired by the generosity and thoughtfulness of everyone here, from the woman who taught me to block print to the young kids who wrote me birthday cards. At Vatsalya there is a very present sense of family- of looking out for one another and supporting and welcoming one another. This sense of community and support has really inspired me to be increasingly thoughtful, open, and generous, and it has taught me that, like the word "vatsalya" means, all you really need is unconditional love. (Sammy)

I learned how simple happiness is. And I learned that there are threads that link us all together, no matter how different we are. (Livia)

I learned how to say “thank you” and mean it. I learned about love, and how you only need a little bit of it to do and feel something great. I learned to overcome language barriers because opening your heart can be more effective than opening your mouth. (MaeLea)

I further learned the value of education and how special being educated is.  I saw through the kids at Vatsalya how knowledge is one of the best gifts ever.  (Sophie Goldberg)

I learned through Jaimala’s story how one observation or societal issue can spark an idea for change, and how Vatsalya’s purpose reflects values of education and the ability to happily flourish in a caring, communal place. (Cameron)

I’ve learned that how someone is born does not determind their fate and that through people like Jaimala, people have the opportunity to steer their futures in a positive stable direction. (Mac)

I have learned and seen that the power of an inspired idea and a few dedicated people can spur true change. But most personally, I have shifted my perspective of what service means, and am beginning to view volunteerism as a cycle --- one that I have contributed to but one that starts and continues with others.
