Students are headed home after a very full couple of days, saying goodbyes and celebrating! Our final night together we ate daal bhat, reminisced by a cozy fire and shared chocolate treats. It was filled with so much laughter, the perfect finish to an amazing journey!

Students have all boarded their international flight and are headed home! Thank you all for joining us on this amazing journey!

Be well,

Transference is a rich time for Dragons students. During these final days of our course our students still have one foot grounded in Nepal and our experience here, but, simulnaneously, are stepping back home. After completing our rural homestays in Ale Gau, we traveled up to the historical hilltop station of Bandipur. Amid beautiful Newari architecture stooped with time and fleeting, misty views of the Himalayas, our group created a space for reflection, celebration, ceremony, and fun. We also began concretely talking about students' return home: what it will be like to articulate the stories from these ultimately indescribable three months in Nepal, what to expect from reverse culture shock, how to protect all of the incredible growth and development we've fostered here. We embraced 'liminality,' a deeply tranformative state of being in which one is betwixt-and-between. We aren't home yet, but our days and hours in a country we've come to love are numbered. What a ripe time to express love for Nepal and for the group, to journal about how we've grown and changed, and to experience the poingniant bittersweet joy of impermanence and transition. Before we left Bandipur we went on a group expedition to explore the sacred Mahasiddha Cave, the largest cave in South Asia. We stood in awe of the perfect darkness of this geological temple, and rich silence in the depth of this cave perfectly expressed everything that words failed to capture. How thankful we were for everything that has happened. How we simultaneously wish we could stay in our new Nepali home forever and how incredibly excited we are to return our friends and family at our American, Canadian, Chinese, or Columbian home. Our final moments in Nepal find us in Kathmandu. We will begin our last day here with a yoga practice, and then have a few hours for final errands and gift shopping before students go to the airport to meet their international flight home. Again, we instructors want to thank everyone who gave these incredible students so much love and support throughout a challenging, beautiful, and transformative semester in Nepal. It has been truly been a blessing to walk alongside such strong, inspiring young adults for these three months. [post_content] => To sum up my village experience - I became a porch dweller. Long stretches of my days were plopped on Aamaa's wide porch peeling garlic, cutting veggies for talkuri, reading and writing, or just hanging out with friends. Countless cups of milk tea were cooked and spread to the masses. Before bedtime, after too many hot cups of buffalo milk, I would take spontaneous ice-cold bucket showers. Instead of being freezing and heart stopping, in village those bucket showers were oddly refreshing. I am not sure if this makes sense, but everything in village requires so much effort and mindfulness that even the simple act of dumping water over one's head became an act of gratitude. What I am trying to say, is said better by the Cherokee Prayer.

O'Great Spirit

help me always

to speak the truth quietly,

to listen with an open mind

when others speak,

and to remember the peace

that may be found in silence.

-Cherokee Prayer

Love always,

Hira

As I sip my steaming mug of milk tea--made from fresh water buffalo milk , black tea and spices--my Aama and I exchange a smile and start to laugh. Each morning I say "Namaste Aama! Haami pakaunne?" (Hi Aama, can we cook?) to which she replies "La, la pakaunne" (Okay we'll cook). We crouch around the clay wood-fired stove and make breakfast together. In these early foggy hours in Ale Gau, flurries of hens swarm around us, the buffalo moans, and puja bells ring throughout the hillside. My job is to stir the sizzling vegetables and name the ingredients as Aama adds them to the cast-iron pan. This is our daily routine. Whenever I say the proper name of a spice or vegetable, Aama breaks into a big smile and calls out "Ayyyy." Although I can only speak pidgin Nepali, we manage to communicate and I feel we have forged a meaningful connection. Nothing like food to bring people together!

Dear Buddah, Zeus, Allah, Shiva, The Great Forrest Farries of The Earth and God,

We gather here together today to celebrate and remember all that we are thankful for. And oh how we have endless reasons to rejoice in this beautiful life. Firstly, we are greatful for our pasts. For not only the grand adventure of our time in Nepal, but the journey that brought us here. Thank you to our family and freiends back home who encouraged and supported us financially to take the chance to travel to Nepal in the Fall... A decision that would and has ultimatley shaped us for the rest of our lives. Whatever the reason that lead us each to be sitting in the Ale Gau Village today, we are here now. And since the present moment is all we truly have, we are thankful for it.

We are thankful to the Ale Village and the loving families that have welcomed us here... And of course, we are very, very thankful for this food. To the cooks and farmers who have speant coountless hours tending to the crops that fuel our bodies. Because as Nepalis say, “daal bhat power twenty-four hour.”

Endless thanks to our instructors, for they have lead, educated, supported and loved us every step of the way. Without your help from day one, we would probably still be wandering around Kathmandu aimlessly attempting to catch a micro.

Finally, we must give thanks to eachother and ourselves. Our courage, love and visible passion for life has not only become stonger as individuals, but as a group,  as “Himalaya A” and as a family. Looking forward, although we will embark on various paths, our journey as “Him A” still continues. We have another family now, another “pariwaar”, and that is something to be forever greatful for.

Namaste, Amen and Happy Thanksgiving from Nepal

Now let's eat!

It has been quite some time since my presence has graced this lovely page, and admittedly it's lateness is due to my not wanting to disturb the contentment of village life with the pitter patter of keys on a net-book. However I do understand the importance of sharing our moments of time with our friends and family, recounting our plethora of experiences and to show Mom that yes, I am still alive. Also I had no idea what to write about, so I got creative and I hope, dear Reader, that you will enjoy.

A lesson on the Three A's:

Before we hopped, skipped, and jumped to Ale Gau, we leap-frogged to an Ashram. It was a beautiful place with equally beautiful chyiaa. There, Yogatara, enlightened us wide-eyed students on a number of subjects within Yoga. You guessed it, one of them being the Three A's. Dun-Dada-dun! The entire idea of the Three A's is to be able to exercise them before you make any decisions. Most people skip them all together and proceed right to making a choice, which is ultimately rash. They are as follows.

Awareness: Being attentive, your sight is clear and expanding continuously.

Acceptance: Presence, allowing, encompassing. A place where judgment does not lie.

Attitude: Very powerful. It directs the flow. Only if you are aware and accepting, then you are able to choose your attitude.

Straightforward enough, wouldn't you agree? So before sitting down to write this glorious Yak, I consulted my Three A's. Addressing each one I came upon a clear decision on what to write about. There seemed to be no other choice. As a foreword, as Caitlin says, I cannot begin to explain the depths of my hunger.

Recipes To Live By:

Aamaa's Dud Chiyaa

1/3 Water Buffalo milk

Handful of Chyiaa masala

5 tsp. Sugar (Aamaa really puts in 10)

Bhat

I warn you that your Dragon's student may come home with a predilection towards Daal Bhat.

Signing off in search for a cup of chyiaa,

Hira
