[post_content] => After 90 days exploring the intricacies of the colorful India together, today we sadly had to say farewell. Everyone made it safely to the airport and is eagerly awaiting the 3:30 AM flight that will carry them to London and then to each of their perspective destinations. It is sad to see everyone go, but it has been beautiful watching everyone throughout these 3 months transform. Please be patient with them upon arrival, and only ask “how was India?” if you really want the long winded answer!

With so much love,

2 days.  I get on that plane in the Delhi airport to go home in 2 days.  My mind is in a limbo between India and America and the world will soon come crashing down.  I am balancing atop the world trying to balance but, alas, I will come crashing down.  They say that home is where the heart is and here is my heart, on my sleeve, in my bare hands, in India.  When I am in the United States will my heart remain in India?  How will I survive without my heart?  India has shattered it and rebuilt it from scratch and here is my heart, in India.
Will I forget these people and these places?  Will I be the person that I was or the person that I have become? Will I love the same way?  Will I listen the same way?  Will I live a life that I am proud of?  What if one day this is but a distant memory - what then?
There are so many questions but not as many answers.  As I stand atop the world holding my heart in my bare hands I can't help but look down into the darkness that is beneath me.  This balance is precarious.  I'm losing it. I'm falling.

[post_content] => This is my voice.

I heard a poet speak these words, and for better or for worse, these words are true.

I have no way of knowing where I'll go from here, where I'll wind up in a month or in a year, but I hope that wherever I am, I'll still know you.

I've fought battles in my life, I know that words can cut deeper then a knife, but I have survived all this to be here, to find you.

You, who have been my constant friend, the echo in my head, you're the one who'd never leave no matter how hard I'd beg or plead for it all to end, and in this way I'll forever be indebted to you my friend.

I have climbed mountains, I have flown across oceans, I have seen distant lands, and met all different kinds of man, yet here is where I've come to rest my head.

In this spot, on this day, in this place I've never seen, feet dipped in water that is greener then it is blue, here is where I've come to recognize you.

This is my voice.

It may sound harsh at times, but I'm trying to be kind, not just to others but also to myself, for I find that even though my heart has grown strong it carries the harshest of my words, and I'm not sure how much longer it can carry all this hurt, so I'm trying to let it go.

I don't know how long it will take or how many mistakes I will make along the way, all I know is that I'm trying and that's the best that I can do.

I'm done with being quiet or watching what I say, afraid of being judged or left or lead astray. I'm weaker then I look or at least that's how I was, people think that I am strong just because, I smile all day long, but in reality I'm just a girl trying to find her voice in a very large world, so I'm sorry if sometimes it may come off too proud or too loud or whatever it may be,

But this is my voice, and now that I've found it, get ready to hear me roar.

Hear Me Roar

Description

This is my voice. I heard a poet speak these words, and for better or for worse, these words are true. I have no way of knowing where I’ll go from here, where I’ll wind up in a month or in a year, but I hope that wherever I am, I’ll still know you. I’ve […]

[post_content] => Our trip to Calcutta was jam-packed with sites to visit, monuments to see, Bengali food to eat and music to listen to. The group was constantly on the move, trying to make the most of our few days in West Bengal.

One monument in particular, The Victoria Memorial, caught everyone's attention.
In the weeks leading up to our trip, I researched the Victoria Memorial to gain a better understanding of what we would be seeing. With the information I gained, I presented the site to the group and facilitated a group discussion. We had our discussion sitting in the fresh, green garden right outside of the memorial. It was evident that everyone had similar thoughts on what we just saw.

Everyone seemed to admire the beautiful oil paintings, the European architecture, old weaponry displayed behind glass, high ceilings and large garden. But along with this, we discussed the irony of this monument being in India. It's ironic because there was no evidence of Indian life and culture throughout the site...none.
We understand that the memorial was built as a tribute to the British rule in India, but we were shocked by not seeing any Indian architecture, statues of Hindu gods/goddesses or even mention of Indian citizens. The memorial definitely seemed like it could be someone in Europe, not in Calcutta.

All in all, the Victoria Memorial was definitely one of the most beautiful sites we saw during our trip, and stirred up a great group discussion.

Arts and Culture, Kolkata After a late night/early morning return journey from Kolkata to Benares, fatigue is the last rite of passage. It was a 3 tier (sleeping berths) experience for our group on the Rajdhani, a "premiere" train plying its trade between Delhi and Kolkata, Hindi and Bengali, night and day, business and pleasure. These trains lumber along much like we would after getting filled up on a proper North Indian meal. Nothing is missed in the mix. The butter, the roti, the rice, lentils, vegetables, spices, sweets, curd must all be there to ensure not only that capacity has been utilized but that tastes have been satisfied and contentment reached. Benares is a small city (in comparison) on the way to either Kolkata or Delhi, two cities that verge beyond mega-metropolis. But despite differences in style and size, they all share in a rich fullness, taken in delightful proportion. Old yellow ambassador taxis punctuate the broad avenues of "Cal." Though they belch the black smoke of old age, there seems a firm unspoken belief that they will never die. There's an art to utilizing a hunk of metal until it virtually disintegrates. Scraps seem to assemble from odd corners of the city to form a public bus or a ramshackle delivery truck. And somehow these heavy conglomerates manage always to thud to life and keep pace, albeit a pace that is ever stunted by the input of higher numbers, challenging any standard concept of carrying capacity. The one immutable expression of these so-called 1st tier cities (including Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai) is that everything is always in motion. A culture of heavy combustion engines exists that thud in and out of consciousness, but remain ultimately motion driven. Our first breath in Kolkata was taken on the Howrah bridge that passes over the Hooghly river. We were a caravan of 4 yellow ambassadors, exhaling all the inescapable first impressions: multi-storied buildings, green space, relative logic in urban planning, absence of cows. After some roundabout adventures and unexpected sight-seeing, we arrived at our residence for the week, the YWCA on Middleton. All the facades, motifs, busts and acoustically acrobatic corridors suggested brooding vacancies. We seemed to introduce a welcomed gregarious occupancy. With instructor team conspicuously silent, though altogether present, our official "student led expedition" was kicked off at noonday, 20th November. Our initial venturing out led us to St. Paul Cathedral followed by Victoria Memorial. In terms of Arts and Culture in India, these structures provide such good fodder for conflicting reactions. What is the relevance of a memorial for Queen Victoria in a nation that fought and won its independence from British rule? And what is the cultural significance of an elaborately adorned cathedral amidst a hindu/muslim dominated demographic? These questions were floated among the student group without any wholly conclusive answers. The famous Kali temple was the following morning's focus of inquiry. A truly imposing structure, this temple is surrounded by astonishingly aggressive commerce and devotion, often a charming mix of the two. Later that evening, our student leaders quelled the disappointment of a closed zoo by embarking on a spontaneous adventure about the city. The success and simple satisfaction found in spontaneity seemed to strike a chord with the students and set the tone for the rest of the trip. Indeed, spontaneity is in rhythmic congruence with the sporadic whirl of Kolkata. Delicious food, pastel sunsets, the vacuous and excessive wealth of the Maharaja's Marble Palace, enduring smiles from what often times felt like "the audience" (local folks) filled our experience for the remainder of our stay and its like the buoyant pages of this near concluding chapter got fat with wind and took flight. Back in Benares, as the sun rounds the dawning turn and a melodic voice is amplified over the Ghats, fluttering like an undulating river, we find ourselves at our last go in Varanasi. When we arrived, there had been a recent flooding which wrecked havoc on the city of Varanasi. The water level reached the base of the stupas, which sit above the stairs, the ghats, that lead down to the sacred Ganga-ji. Sand, clay, and mud covered the strands of concrete where you could typically walk freely alongside the river. In the US we would have had machines come and dredge away the thick layers of earth that inhibited walking from one ghat to the next; but that kind of technology and infrastructure is simply not an option here. Instead along each ghat there were two men with hoses constantly pointed at the mud slowly but steadily ebbing away with streams of water. Now almost 8 weeks later, you can again walk along unconstrained but also unconscious of the amount of hours it took to remove each grain of sand from beneath your feet. It will feel strange to leave Varanasi. For us, each day it has also felt like layers have been slowly disintegrating; what felt so foreign upon arrival is now so familiar. What felt so uncomfortable will now be hard to leave behind. Movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqDbPJGH1OI&feature=youtu.be

[post_content] => Some call him Sachin, most call him god. After putting up a very respectable 74 against West Indies, the great and powerful passed on from his cricket career at approximately 10:45 am from a caught reverse sweep. Many a painted brow was bowed for the loss of such an icon. In attendance were many a bollywood star and a few political powerhouses. After a few moments of silence to show respect for the passing, the crowd was brought to its feet again with the ritualized chanting of the gods name.

"Saaaachin, Saaaaachin."

The world may never know what this man was, but for 24 years and 200 international test's he has had the heart of his country.

RIP, retire in peace, Sachin Tendulkar (11-15-89  -  11-14-13)
