Selamat Siang!
Indonesia at first seemed like such a different world. The sounds, the sight, the smells, the toilets. But in so many ways the country and the people seem so much more human than America. The smiles are wider and the Indonesians are so patient and willing to talk to you. Even when the little Indonesian you know fails you and the way that you end up communicating is by pointing at things. The past few days were orientation, which we spent at a beach resort called Queen by the Sea in Parangtritis, about an hour out of Yogykarta. The sand at the beach is black and few go in the water because of the fear that the goddess that lives there will take them. Those that do brave the shallow water are fully clothed, which was definitely different from the US. It was sad leaving the resort today because it was so beautiful, but it's exciting to know that that it was only my first slice of this vast and vibrant country.
Hope all's well!
Emily

Dear parents and friends,

In light of the recent bombing at the US embassy in Libya, I want to assure everyone that recent events have not affected the safety of Americans traveling in Indonesia. Although you may be seeing some incendiary news coverage of protests in Jakarta in front of the American Embassy compound, the reality is that there was very little reaction to the situation in Libya here in Indonesia. Footage being used in international coverage was taken from a rather small protest by a fundamentalist group called HTI. This is a group that regularly protests in Jakarta in response to many issues that are perceived to be in conflict with the group's particular interpretation of Islam. The protest was so unremarkable here in Indonesia that it barely made the headlines of the largest national newspaper.

Furthermore, we are currently located in the city of Yogyakarta in Central Java, an 8-hour train ride away from the capital city of Jakarta. The Yogyakarta municipality has a population of about 400,000 people, and is renowned for its peaceful and open society. There are over one hundred universities here and a diverse population. Maintaining a peaceful, safe and harmonious environment is considered one of the main duties of the local government and the region's ruling Sultan. As a center for the traditional arts, this community welcomes visitors from all over the world and people are excited to share its beauty and unique heritage with foreigners.

The students will be living and studying in the vicinity of Gadjah Mada University, one of the oldest and most respected schools in the country. I have worked as a lecturer in a graduate program here for over two years, and my partner and I have many strong connections in this community. Your children are watched and cared for not only by Sarah, Aaron, and I but by my family's personal friends and neighbors. They are welcomed here as family, not guests, and will be treated accordingly. As a scholar of this country and a long-term resident, I feel confident that they are entirely safe here.

If you have any further questions about the region or about current political and religious issues, please don't hesitate to contact me directly via email (swazey@hawaii.edu). My academic background is in Anthropology focused on the politics of religion in Indonesia, and I'm happy to provide more information regarding any specific concerns you might have.

Salam (peaceful greetings)

Kelli

Dear parents and friends -

After zooming across continents and oceans, and a sweaty afternoon transferring through the capital city of Jakarta, the students have arrived to a beautiful, moonlit, cool evening in Jogjakarta.

After a candlelit welcome to their new program house in the northern neighborhood of Pogung Baru, we all shared a typical Javanese meal of tempe, tofu, grilled chicken, and rice, along with fresh mango for dessert. Although everyone is understandably tired after more than 30 hours of travel, no one was untouched by the awe and excitement of watching a new world unfold around them.

Tomorrow morning, we begin our orientation by traversing an ancient line of power that runs on a north-south axis, connecting the Jogjakartan Sultan's palace to two sacred spaces. Our first destination is the southern coast of Java, where the black-sand beach called Parangtritis is dotted with horse drawn carts that emerge out of the dawn mist, and the goddess of the sea, Rorol Kidul, is revered. On the 15th, the students will be climbing the very volcano that created that black sand coast, the legendary Gunung Merapi, or "mountain of fire". We'll spend the final days of our orientation in the heart of the city, in between mountains and sea, exploring the Sultan's compunds and palace, and learning about the royal family's connection to gods and goddesses that inhabit these two spectacular natural features.

We ask that you have patience with us as we take this time to introduce your sons and daughters to the mystical world of Javanese life and belief, and the beginning of their adventure in Indonesia. You can expect some Yaks Yaks to be posted by the 17th or 18th when we return from our orientation activities. Thank you again for giving us the opportunity to lead your children in this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Dengan hormat (with respect)

Kelli, Sarah and Aaron

Dear Families and Friends,

We just wanted to pass along a quick update that our group has arrived in Hong Kong. We will be boarding our flight to Jakarta in less than an hour and then have our final travel leg to unite with Kelli and Sarah in Jogjakarta. Despite the 30+ hour travel adventure, the group is in great spirits!

Please expect another quickYak update from us by September 12th when we reach our final destination in Jogjakarta.

Dragons Indonesia program is off to an excellent start. It was as if the heavens themselves were christening this adventure that these eleven students and three instructors were embarking on. (please see photos) The students congregated in Los Angeles meeting up with instructor Aaron Slosberg. While in LA the students ate some pizza and started the trip with some get-to-know-you activities, a language lesson on Bahasa, practicing different ways of greeting; and most importantly creating a solid tone that will last throughout the journey.

One thing that really impressed me about this group of students was their desire to be active, attentive, and positive despite traveling for long periods of time, with a future of more traveling on the horizon. They are well into a group forming stage and creating excellent bonds and deep in conversation and connections with each other. At this moment they are en route to Indonesia and their journey has begun!

Thank you for all of your love and support. Stay tuned to the Yak board for many more updates from these awesome students. From an instructor in Los Angeles that is inspired and really, really stoked for this amazing group of students whom are embarking on a journey that will forever change them.

Salam teman-teman,

We are now just tujuh hari from our departure date and if you’re anything like the 3 of us, you’re probably brimming with a nervous excitement for the journey to come. We are aware that the logistical preparations can seem to engulf your life prior to a huge adventure like this one, perhaps the farthest steps away from the familiar that you have taken. In fact, getting everything together and packing can be a lot of work and even a bit exhausting. While we certainly want you to be well prepared in a practical sense, a much more vital aspect of your preparation is the mindset -your intention, your aspiration- that you will bring with you.Spend quality time with your loved ones and wrap up loose ends, so that you can board our international flight feeling fully present.

We ask that you take some time to reflect upon what mindsetyouwish to bring with you to Indonesia and how you intend to make the most of the extraordinary learning opportunities that this semester will offer you. Ultimately, we will do our best to open incredible doors, but you have to step through them.

In order to provide some fuel for thought, we have provided three prompts with some suggested readings. Please use these as a jumping off point for this written reflection. The prompts are intended to provide inspiration, challenge assumptions, and ignite deep thinking and lively discussions.

Our expectation is that your reflection will be given to us in our first few days in Indonesia, or if you’re willing to share, posted as a Yak Yak before arrival. Which reminds us, PLEASE DO NOT FORGET TO BRING YOUR JOURNAL AND PEN(S). There is no right or wrong answer, or expected length for this reflection. Write what feels true to you. We know many of you are excited to look outside of the classroom and like all exercise, this one is useful only as much as it benefits you; we hope it will. We only ask that you take some space to think deeply and explore your own values, aspirations, and motivations.

Prompt 1:

Ken Robinson - "Changing Education Paradigms"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDZFcDGpL4U&feature=player_embedded

In this short clip, Ken Robinson expresses his opinions about the way education and schooling has been structured in Western society. He has some theories as to why students are disenchanted, and why our schooling systems are actually keeping us from reaching our true potential.

Do you agree with him? Are there examples from your own experience that relates to the issues raised here? Education is recognized as a fundamental human right – but what do we mean by education? What do you think the youth of today need to learn and how do you think this should be achieved? How do you learn best?

Prompt 2:

We all come from very different backgrounds. Reflect upon how your unique background has shaped who you are today. What is your truth? Try to identify how your experiences, influences and relationships have shaped you. This is a challenging exercise, and if given the time, can also be highly rewarding. Cultivating self-awareness and an appreciation and respect for the perspective of others is a pillar we return to often throughout a Dragons semester.

Prompt 3 (Suggested Readings):

The following articles are examples of four major themes that we will encounter across the different communities we visit in Indonesia – and will introduce you to issues that are currently hotly debated by people throughout the country. As you’ll discover, many of the people in the places we’ll visit have very personal stakes in the very kinds of issues described in these articles. Your course reader is a resource that will help give background to understand the lives, and the stories, of our local counterparts you’ll soon be living side by side with.

Please read these articles, and use the following questions as a “jumping-off” point to reflect on any or all of the following pieces:

What are some major themes discussed in this/these article(s)?

Do any of these articles remind you of similar issues currently debated in public in the United States?

Did any of these articles provoke a strong reaction from you? Why?

Did any of these articles surprise you, or challenge your perception of what you think your experience in Indonesia is going to be like?

In what ways do you think you could explore this/these issue(s) further during your time in Indonesia?

Hey there!

My name is Lauren and I’m from Boulder, Colorado. I graduated in the spring from New Vista High School. I love all forms of art. Metal work, glass art, and photography in particular. I’ve spent my summer working at a restaurant and doing some traveling as well. These past couple of months my hometown has seemed even more beautiful and welcoming than it has the past 18 years that I’ve lived here and I am honestly nervous to leave it behind. However, I know the next three months are going to be life changing, and I can’t wait to get started!

Just like the rest of you I’m eager to travel and am very excited for our three-month journey. I wanted to take a year off before college to travel, and I chose dragons because this course seemed like a great opportunity to travel in a way most people don’t ever get the chance to. I’m also passionate about conservation, and I believe that is one focus of these courses. I’ll be attending Syracuse University if the fall of 2013 and majoring in photography. Needless to say I can’t wait to photograph this trip!

Question: Should I bring a UV water purifier?

Instructor answer: UV water purifers (e.g., steripens) can be a nice travel luxary, but are not necessary. If you already have one, feel free to bring it, but no need to go pick up a new one. We will always ensure access to drinkable water whether it be through boiling, bottles, or forms of water treatment. Thanks for the questions Scout!

Hi Scout,

Thanks for your questions.

First, we are not planning on going to Bali this semester. Our main locations will be Java, Sulawesi, and Maluku province.

Second, there will be opportunities to learn about coral farming and coral reef restoration, especially during our time in Sampella.

Third, definitely do not bring any tanks! Be sure to bring a mask and snorkel though.

Thanks for the questions!

-Aaron, Kelli, and Sarah
