Hey everyone! My name is Alexandra Hennig, Ali for short, and I am from Hong Kong. I am half German, half Danish and have lived in Hong Kong all my life. I went to boarding school in Vancouver Island, BC, where i graduated from high school in 2010, and then continued on to attending Occidental College the past year. I however, did not enjoy my experience there and so have decided to take some time off uni to gain a new perspective. I only recently signed up in the past week, so i am a little rushed to get everything organized. Though I am extremely nervous for this adventure, I am also really excited! I think what drew me to this program was the trekking. I cannot wait to stand on top of a mountain in Nepal and be blown away by what I can only imagine to be the most breathtaking view. I intend to keep a journal throughout the next three months, as well as take lots of photographs. Although my camera is a little heavy, I do not want to miss the opportunity to take some amazing shots.

That is all i really have for now, please feel free to add me on facebook if you want! I will be meeting you all in either Hong Kong or Kathmandu as I will not be starting my trip in LA like the rest of you. Don't bond too much without me! lol, I can't wait to meet you all!

-Ali

Namaste!

Thank you for posting introductions and sharing a bit about yourselves and your interests. Keep them coming!!!!

In response to Rob's ipod question, our program houses have space for students to store their belongings when moving around Nepal during your course. The storage spaces are kept locked, so all of your belonging will be safe while you are traveling in-country.

Hi everybody, I'm Rob.

What an exciting time in our life this is! I'm from Hawai`i, on the island of Oahu. Born and raised here but I also like to travel a lot. I've been fortunate to venture to places like Argentina, Singapore, Japan, and some of the United States. I recently got back from a Spring Quarter study abroad in Australia. I did an internship in Sydney on sustainability and I also had the opportunity to travel to parts of Western Australia. I just finished my second year at Santa Clara University in California, but I'm planning on transferring somewhere else. (Still trying to figure that part out, hence the year off to travel and explore)

This summer I have been doing conservation work, which has included hiking, camping, trail maintenance, invasive species removal, and planting of endemic plants.

My interests include, the ocean, hiking, basketball, playing and listening to music, cooking, eating, and mindfulness. I'm definitely most excited about expanding my knowledge on Buddhism. Yoga is also something I've always wanted to do.I’m undecided on my ISP but I’m sort of gravitating towards Buddhism. Random note: I’m probably going to be bringing the book Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse. It’s small and a pretty short read. I’ll trade with anybody who wants to read it!

Questions: I saw that iPods are recommended to be left at home (due to breaking at high elevation), but would it still be possible to use them for our long flights? Many of us will be in transit to Nepal for close to 48 hours.

Also, does anyone know of good quality, effective, but comfortable earplugs? I haven’t had any luck finding good ones.

Hope to hear from you all soon,

Rob

Hi everyone! Like Meredith, I have to give a quick thanks to Anna, as I was shy of being the first to post.

My name is Sarah. I’m eighteen years old and live in Riley, Kansas. I will be attending KSU in January, though am unsure what field I want to study. My range of interests is wide, but most of all I love working with animals. I am currently employed at the local nature center where I have the wonderful opportunity to do just that - I often bring orphaned birds and mammals home to take care of, so I’ve been happily surrounded by wildlife for the past couple months. This has lead me to consider an ISP involving wildlife and environmental study. Nonetheless, I’m enchanted by the idea of learning about different beliefs and ways of life. Stories also fascinate me – how myths and legends carry through time or family lines to teach, in their own way, lessons from the past.

When it comes to which part of the trip I’m most excited about, I can’t seem to pin down a single aspect. I’m greatly anticipating the opportunity to visit a monastery, and to trek in the Himalayan Mountains. As far as what I’m most nervous about, I think I would say the homestays, but it’s a sort of nervous-excited mix. Mostly I’m worried about accidentally offending someone or seeming disrespectful, so I’m very thankful our instructors will be there to guide us about what is acceptable.

In any case, I am ever-thankful for the chance to take part in what will no doubt be a life-changing experience. I’m not sure it has completely ‘clicked’ in my mind that I’m actually going yet, though! I will be arriving in LA early in the morning (8-9am) on September 6th. Anna, I love reading, so I’d be happy to hear any recommendations you have for books about the Himalayan region! What are your favorites?

Also, does anyone have a camera model they’d recommend, both for the trip and photography in general? Though I’d like to invest in a DSLR, I think for the trip I want something more compact and less flashy. My old camera has finally stopped working, so I’m trying to figure out what I should get next. I would love something capable of taking clear action-shots and night-shots without sacrificing too much image quality.

Take care,

Sarah
