Hi!

I'm Sarah Paul, 17 (like Kayla, will be turning 18 during our trip), and I am from Long Island (like Seton, but I'm more west). Like many of you, I decided to take a gap year before college to focus on something other than academics, something scary and exciting, and very different from what I've been used to. I have never been abroad (except for Canada), and I can't wait to see more of the world and become immersed in a culture other than my own! I've taken Spanish in school, but I am far from fluent :/ I love hiking and really anything outdoors, and I'm excited to live with so few belongings :)

I still have so much to purchase (yikes!), and I don't know what and what not to bring!

Anyway, can't wait to meet all of you!!

Sarah

Hi everyone,

My name is Kendall George and I'm from a small town, Mountain Lakes, in northern New Jersey. I turn 18 on August 17th and I am taking a gap year before college. Like everyone else, I just need a break from focusing so much on schoolwork and time to travel and grow and all that stuff. After this year, I'm hoping to go to college on the west coast to get away from the tri-state bubble. My parents tried to introduce me and my sister to different countries and cultures while growing up, and I've always enjoyed seeing life in other perspectives. I like to bike, hike, swim, anything outside, and I love soccer. I know this is going to be an amazing experience and I amreally excitedto get to know everyone.

And Seton, to answer your question I got a foam pad. It's super light and the store attendant said that you can roll it up, put it in your bag and then let it open up so that there is a wide hole in the middle to put everything else in. I thought it sounded good, so that's what I'm doing. Hope it helps.

Can't wait to see everyone!

Hi all upcoming Amazon travelers!

We wanted to take this chance, as you all are beginning to visit travel doctors and make a plan for vaccinations and medications, to give some more information, especially in regard to malaria prophylaxis.

Dragons has no specific stipulations or requirements regarding malaria and you should know that it is up to your discretion. We hope the following information from us can supplement info you’ve already received.

As a caveat, and in line with all of our literature, please consult your travel doctor for ALL medical recommendations. We do our best to provide clear information, but also recognize that we at Dragons are not medical professionals and cannot give specific medical advice. This is to be worked out with your doctor, but we encourage you to come to them with questions because it is not uncommon for many doctors to offer blanket-prescriptions while not considering the specific details of their client’s travels.

Also note that many malaria prophylactics have side effects that should be considered and tested before committing to 13 weeks of travel in a foreign country. In addition, it is important to note that medications for malaria do not prevent you from contracting the disease, but they do lessen the associated symptoms.

An important way we can help in your decision with your travel doctor is to give you a very clear breakdown of the regions and altitudes where we will be, which are the two determining factors in coming up with a plan for malaria prophylaxis. And we can also provide informative references and ultimately, we are in full support of whatever regimen your travel doctor has prescribed.

THE CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL REFERENCES
The CDC website for Bolivia (http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/bolivia.aspx) states the following:
“Areas of Bolivia with Malaria: All areas <2,500 m (<8,202 ft) in the following departments: Beni, Chuquisaca, Cochabamba, La Paz, Pando, Santa Cruz, and Tarija. None in city of La Paz.”

And for Peru the following
“Areas of Peru with Malaria: All departments <2000 m (6,561 ft) except none in Arequipa, Moquegua, Puno, and Tacna. Present in Puerto Maldonado. No malaria in highland tourist areas (Cuzco, Machu Picchu, and Lake Titicaca).”

OUR ITINERARIES
Our fall semester will begin its course in the La Paz and/or Cochabamba departments and at altitudes between 2600 and 5000 meters above sea level. Our travels will then take us to various parts of the mountains in the La Paz department or perhaps to Peru in the Cuzco and Madre de Dios Departments at similar altitudes (over 2600 meters). Your groups will descend to the Amazon Basin no sooner than the beginning of October and until that time be at altitudes higher than 2600 meters. Once we have descended to the Amazon lowlands students should expect to spend up to three weeks at altitudes between 400 and 1600 meters (either in the La Paz, Cochabamba and/or Beni Departments of Bolivia or in the Madre de Dios and Cuzco departments of Peru).

PLAN
So, while we cannot give specific medical advice, note that the CDC does say the cities of Cochabamba, La Paz, Sorata, Cuzco, and other areas we will travel in the first 4 weeks are at altitudes that are above malarial risk areas.

Additionally, we can plan for the specific day that we drop into the Amazon lowlands and can advise each of you in advance to begin your medications (no sooner than the beginning of October). And then when we come back up to the mountains, the divide is very clear as well and we can come up with a plan for finishing the prescription.

Our total time in malarial risk zones, according to the CDC, will be no more than 3 weeks.

Please talk to your travel doctor about this, perhaps bringing a print up of this yak as well as the sample itinerary offered on our website and in our catalog and see what they recommend. We will work with whatever recommendations your doctor makes.

VISAS AND MOSQUITOES
It is imperative that you bring an ORIGINAL COPY of your Yellow Fever Vaccination Card (the yellow paper that many people just staple to their passport) for entry to Bolivia. This is not just to get across the border in Bolivia for your visa, but also to board the international flight from Miami to La Paz. American Airlines has been known to be a stickler to this one.

We hope this helps, and please send us an e-mail or give a cal if you have any questions about this. We hope all your other preparation is going well!

Best,

Tim Hare and Dragons’ Admin

Hi everyone,

I'm Kayla, from just south of San Francisco, California. I am 17 (but soon to be celebrating my birthday during our trip!) and just graduated from high school. After working hard, I am looking forward to learning (in a less traditional sense of the word) and having experiences beyond what I already know before college. This program is exactly what I had hoped to do with my gap semster!

Considering the introductions already posted, it seems there are going to be some common themes running through this thread. Firstly, like Livi, I will be attend Middlebury College beginning February 2012. My interests and curiosities tend to relate to people, nature, or both. I love being outside, whether I'm doing something active or simply reading a book under the trees or by a lake. Ususally I can be found in or around a swimming pool, but I also like to run, hike, backpack, ski, kayak, etc. Recently the Harry Potter fan in me has shown itself more often than usual - I am currently reading "Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal" to keep up with my Spanish :)

I also have a few questions about packing. Even though I'm not nearly finished gathering all the items on the list, I feel like I have too much stuff. For example, I have a total of 5 "bottoms": a pair of shorts, pants that can zip off into shorts, a second pair of long pants, fleece pants, and rain pants. They're all on the list, but I wonder if I should take one out. How can/should I prioritize? On a similar note, someone who's been on the trip might know from experience whether both lightweight and midweight long underwear are necessary? And insect repellant: is DEET the best, or is there a good environmentally friendly alternative?

Thanks for your insight. I look forward to meeting you all!

Paz,

Kayla

Hello!

I'm seton talty, I live in Southampton New York but I went to boarding school in Newport RI. For my spring semester of high school I attended school in Leadville Colorado, going on backpacking trips and continuing with my classes. I can’t wait to start our travels!

I havea question about sleeping pads. I used to use an inflatable one however on my last trip, it popped. This is making me think I might want to try one that doesn’t inflate. But thenI don’t want it to be too bulky as well. What are you guys getting? Any suggestions?

Hello, everyone!

This is my introduction for the fall Andes and Amazon trip.

Obviously, you can see my name which is Max Hittesdorf - enjoy trying to pronounce my last name. I am nineteen years old. I have grown up and currently live in Fort Collins, Colorado. I just finished my first year at the University of Colorado in Boulder, and I am now putting a hault to my college career for a year. This upcoming year is sort of a delayed "gap year" or, in other terms, a break from the thirteen years of rigorous work in school. This doesn't mean I am not willing to work hard or be challenged during the year. It just means that I want to be challenged in different ways, hence the reason I have applied to Dragons. I simply enjoy learning through doing.

However, there are many other reasons Dragons was interesting to me based on my hobbies/interests. I have always been excited by being outside, especially in the mountains which are a short drive from my house, and just absorbing the beauty of the natural world. This has translated to common outdoor activities in Colorado for me like hiking, biking, rock climbing, rafting, and so on. I'm sure many of us will have this in common. I also speak some Spanish and am very interested in anthropology, history, music, and some areas of science.

I hope this gives a good picture of who I am. Email me if anyone wants to talk before the trip to get a better idea of who I am.

Nos vemos!

Max

Saludos participantes del semestere en los Andes y la Amazonia,

Greetings and welcome to your yak board.

In just under two months now you will be traveling south together from Miami over Cuba and various Caribbean islands, the Amazon Basin and then crossing the Andes to the heart of South America – Bolivia. We will be greeting the rising Andean sun together from the El Alto airport in the madrugada, eager to learn more about each other and the Andes and Amazon. We are beginning the process that will prepare us to greet that dawn with the appropriate intention, courage and motivation. Your yak board is a forum for this.

I wanted to take the chance briefly to introduce myself and to share a few things about this course while inviting you all to begin using the yak board to answer questions and begin building excitement for this next semester. This introduction will include some key aspects of the course, including the place, your group and the texture of your course.

EL LUGAR
So what’s going on with the place? Well, right now they are having a particularly uncanny dry seasons. Sometimes people call this season in Bolivia their “winter” which isn’t too accurate. A tropical winter isn’t what you would think. Sure, temperatures are a bit colder this time of year, but things we associate with “winter” really don’t apply in the tropical climates that contain the central Andes. Dry season is generally crisp and cold in the highlands but rarely does it snow. Most of the snow falls during the rainy season, which is actually the warmer season. This year’s dry season is different. Bolivia has had snowstorms over the past week. This is mixed blessing for a country that has been suffering from diminishing glaciers due to climate change. The snow is great to allow the glaciers to persist and grow, but the extreme weather of this year has saddled llama herders and potato or quinoa farmers in the highlands with even more challenges in an already challenging landscape. The rainy season that runs from November to April was especially strong this year, the mountains are whiter than we’ve seen in years and the weather continued much later than normal, well into April and on to May. And it seems that it has continued.

By this September as the semester course begins we will be moving into the shoulder season between the dry and rainy seasons. Typically rains don’t pick up until the end of our fall semester and in the meantime we transition again toward the planting season. In October and November we should be able to help farmers set fields with potatoes, quinoa, corn and beans. And as the plants grow, birds will begin to migrate. So we can listen to the chorus of parrots in the morning while sitting beneath the massive Andean summits and watching snow fall on their heights. This is perhaps the most defining aspect of the Andes and Amazon course – diversity – with towering snowcapped peaks, lush tropical forests, high deserts, urban culture, Quechua culture, Amazon culture, ancient culture, different political views and different social or economic realities.

This fall we will be establishing a base for one of the courses in the central valleys of Cochabamba, the agricultural heartland of Bolivia, set in the center of the country in a pleasant semi-tropical valley at 8500 feet. We are excited about this new opportunity and also to be continuing with our previous base in Sorata, also a semi-tropical valley at 8500 feet but set on steep mountain slopes instead of broad plains like Cochabamba. By establishing two separate bases we hope to be able to further distinguish our courses and allow expanded opportunities for you all, depending on your interests.

LA GENTE Y EL VIAJE
Focusing on your course and the look of things this fall, we are excited about the prospects. We will have two full and distinct courses this fall yet again and are looking forward to spreading our work through different areas of Bolivia, catering to your unique interests to design two different courses, one based in Sorata and the other in Cochabamba. We have had the chance to work with this approach over the past two years, as the course has grown in popularity and it has been hugely successful.

Having two separate student groups also means we will have two separate instructor teams. All of our applications are now in and we know that you all will be eager to know which group you will be a part of and who your instructors will be, but we need to ask for a bit of patience as we continue to gather information that will allow us to better delineate these groups – for example we will not have an idea of registration for our accredited courses until the end of the month. So, for this reason we will not be introducing instructor teams or student groups until that time. In the meantime, however, we do encourage you to begin introducing yourselves on the yak board and using this to post any questions you may have for this course, and once we split the groups you will have distinct yak boards. At this point I will be the one responding to these questions, along with a couple of instructors who are not wrapped up in summer courses.

I have been working with Dragons as our Andes and Amazon Semester Director since this programs’ inception four years ago. I have been a Program Director for each semester and have additionally instructed four. With Dragons I have also instructed a Guatemala Semester, our Bolivia summer course, a custom course in Peru and spent two years in Boulder as Latin America Program. I will be helping in pre-course planning and preparation with each of the instructors and also will be 100% available to help all participants and families in their planning for the course, along with the Boulder admin. I am also excited to have the opportunity to meet you all in Bolivia on your first morning!

With that, les dejo, I leave you to begin building your own community on the board here. Please begin to post questions and put yourself out there. Through this we can get to know each other’s interests and background a little better.

Con anticipacion desde Colorado,
