Well, we've been home for almost a month now, so I figured I might as well post my first - and THE first - student reflection yak.

When first arriving back in the states, I underwent severe culture shock; the most severe reaction I felt was in a supermarket. There are just SO many types of food here, most of the fruits aren't in season. Although I felt rather comforted when I stumbled into the candy aisle - yes, my sweet tooth is still around. Falling asleep when I first came home was incredibly strange, as well. Just staring at my ceiling, not hearing Alyssa moan in her sleep (love you, Alyssa!), or the distant oinking of a local pig was something I felt very unaccustomed to.

That's something I think that struck me the most upon returning to New York: being in a familiar place - my home - yet feeling so very distant from it at the same time. After three months of traveling to and from different places, unfamiliarity began to feel, well, familiar. Now, being in a place that I once knew well, and actually hasn't changed too much since I was last here, feels a bit discomforting at times. However, I'm adjusting slowly still. But I still have a lot of Bolivia left to process.

I think about Sorata the most, I think. My family, and what they're doing. It's strange to think that everything is still there. Like everything that happened is from a different lifetime. And, of course, I think about you all. I've seen all my dragons ladies (I wish I could have spent the New Year with you guys!), but I still miss you, regardless of recently we hung out.

Alright, I miss and love everyone! Hope everything is well, and that the adjustment of returning home went/is going smoothly. If anyone is ever out in Colorado - Eva - let me know! Be easy.

~Elyna

Hi, I´m Sophia from Mill Valley, near San Francisco CA. I am 18 (two days ago), just graduated highschool, and am takinga gap year before going to Colorado College--dragons for one semester and hopefully an internship or working for the other. I like studying Spanish and hope to do it in college, running on track, guitar, and traveling. I´m really excited for the trip (especially since I haven´t been to South America), also a little nervous, but it should be fun to meet all of you guys!

Hi everyone,

I'm Molly. I live in Berkeley, CA, across the bay from San Francisco. I'm 18 and I just finished highschool (yay!) so I'm really excited to get a chance to experience something more than just sitting in a classroom all day. I've been coaching summer camp at the SF Circus Center this summer. I also train there in the SF Youth Circus.

Looking forward to meeting you all,

Molly

Hi guys, I just thought I would introduce my self.

My name is Annie Denenberg and I'm really really excited about the trip. I'm 20 years old and live in Takoma Park, MD (right outside DC). I'm spending most of my summer working at a local sports camp and coaching a young girls softball team on the side. But most importantly-actively awaiting our trip. I have started to get the main items bag, sleeping bag, pad, boots...but still have a lot to get.

I just thought I'd introduce myself and hopefully others can do the same. Can't wait to hear from everyone.

~Annie

To all '09Fall Participants:

It’s great to see all the yak boards coming alive! This is a very exciting time of year for all of us, and while we know that you are anxious to meet your traveling companions, we have a request for you: please don’t direct your fellow travelers to social-networking sites before the course. Let us explain: our interest here at Dragons is in providing you with the best experience possible, and over the past 17 years, we have learned that that you will get the most out of your Dragons program if you’re able to make fresh introductions on the day that your course begins. We welcome you to introduce yourself here, and we hope that you will use this site to voice your goals and ideas for this fall’s course and to begin forming a group identity. But we’d like to avoid students forming any sort of “cliques” online before even departing on this program. We certainly know that you can all find each other on Facebook and My Space quite easily, and while we cannot (and don’t want to) forbid such networking, we encourage you to abstain from doing so and invite you to show up to meet your group inSeptember without pre-judgment and with a willingness to expose yourself to everything new, different, wild and other. We wish you the best as you prepare for this fall’s adventure!

Sincerely,

DearFall Semester2009 students and families,

Hello, and welcome to Dragons!

Dragons is a conscientious community of educators, students and travelers committed to actively minimizing our environmental and cultural impact. As an organization, our actions are guided by a dedication to presence, authenticity, and intention in everything that we do, from our printed materials to the courses we run. Though we may not have the answers to the complex goal of sustainability, we are dedicated to the process, and working to foster values that can keep us on the right path. We invite you to join us in this exciting journey.

Thisfall Where There Be Dragons is reaching out to empower participants on our programs to support grassroots environmental organizations who have taken on the task of ecological conservation and restoration. The privilege of flying to faraway places to experience a foreign cultural reality also has significant environmental impact. While international air travel is central to Dragons programming, we are working diligently to balance our equation with a “carbon offset” program. Carbon offsetting is the act of mitigating greenhouse gas emissions – most often by planting trees, but also by supporting the development alternative energy sources and environmental conservation. Depending on the distance of your flight, your aircraft will deposit from 1.5 to 5 tons of carbon into the upper atmosphere! On average, an adult tree will sequester approximately 13 lbs of carbon annually. Still, planting trees remains the most efficient strategy for sequestering carbon from the atmosphere and trees serve many other essential human needs as well.

While some courses may have the opportunity to work directly with local reforestation efforts, Dragons would like to make available to you the option of supporting grass-roots environmental organizations that our courses have interacted with over the years. This fall, we are featuring two community-based organizations:

El Proyecto Chico Mendes; Quetzaltenango, Guatemala

Chico Mendes is a community-based effort to reforest and maintain water supplies in the municipality of Cantel, in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. It is an indigenous organization based on traditional values and worldview, employing communal management of resources and integrating international volunteers who come to learn Spanish and immerse in the resilience and beauty of Q’iche’ Maya Culture. Over the years, students have volunteered and shared in the communal life of this noble organization. Dragons alumni have also organized fundraisers in the U.S. and supported the construction of a greenhouse and planting efforts. If you’re interested in learning more about Chico Mendes, we encourage you to visit the following Spotlight posting on the Dragons bulletin board: my.wheretherebedragons.com/yakyak.php?source=admin_category&action=display&blogID=3272&year=2008&month=11.

Yunnan Eco-Network; Yunnan, China:

Yunnan Eco-Network is one of a small, but growing number of local Chinese environmental NGOs. They focus onenvironmental education, reforestation and renewable energy projects. They are based inKunming andLijiang andhave projects in Lashihai, whereour China Language Intensive program is based. We have collaborated with YEN on anumber of service projects and thedirectors,Chen Yongsong and Liu Libo have beenhelpful mentors for studentsworking on environmentalISPs. Learn more at: http://www.yunnaneconetwork.net.cn/english/.

If you would like to support grassroots organizations working for environmental justice and sustainable management of natural resources, please send us a small donation (10-20$) indicating “Carbon Offset” on the check. Your contribution will be presented on behalf of Where There Be Dragons.

We hope that you will join us in making our travel a sustainable practice. We thank you for your participation!

Sincerely,

The Staff of Where There Be Dragons

Hello Friends and Parents!

Our Yak Yak bulletin boards provide a wonderful place for students to post reflections, insights, and observations, and share their journey with those who are vicariously participating from home. The boards also serve as a great “e-memoir” for students to return to post-course to observe their growth, revisit ideas, and renew their inspiration. Of course, Yak Yak is equally valuable to potential Dragons students and families, who can dig in and gain honest insight into past field experiences.

For these reasons, we prefer to reserve our bulletin boards for postings that are of interest to the entire viewing audience. As most groups will have regular access to web-based email services, we request that personal notes to individual students be sent to students’ personal email accounts. If you would like to share a message with the entire group, post an article that is relevant to the country your student is traveling in, or submit your own composed reflection that is relevant to the country and/or applicable to the viewing interest of all general observers of Yak Yak, we invite you to post!

If there is anything that you would like to communicate to Dragons’ administrative staff, please email your question/comment directly to info@wheretherebedragons.com and we’ll respond as quickly as possible. In addition, you are always welcome to phone our office: 800-982-9203.

Thank you again for your active interest in this fall's upcoming adventures!

Sincerely,

Dragons’ Administrative Staff

Hello!

Welcome to the Where There Be Dragons Yak Yak bulletin board! As you’ll soon discover, this board is a valuable forum for self-introductions, for building community, and for addressing any and all questions that arise during the upcoming months.

Until the start of your course in September, this will be THE place to find important notices related to your course’s development and itinerary design. It’ll also be the place to learn about your fellow students and instructors. So please, post a personal introduction! It may reflect any number of things about you, like: your interests, reasons for choosing Dragons, independent study considerations, or any other thought or inspiration. Please also consider posting your packing and prep-related questions here. Don’t be shy - if you have a question, it’s likely that someone else in your group has been wondering the same thing!! Your instructors have a lot of experience and many, many tips that they’re excited to share with you. So please, ask away.

Setting up the Yak board, in many ways, marks the start of your course. It’s the first step in establishing the community that will support you throughout the journey that lies ahead. Together, you will learn to walk, dress, eat, talk and think in an entirely new way. You will see landscapes that will cause your jaw to drop, and meet people that will touch, change and inspire your life forever. Although your course’s official start date is stilla couple monthsaway, we would like to remind you that your adventure actually began the day you made the choice to join Dragons. Choosing to make your dream a reality took immense amounts of courage, and all of us congratulate you on taking that first, and most important, step.

Welcome to Dragons. We’re excited to share in your adventure!

Sincerely,
